Is the coffee hammer coming now? Capsules are apparently threatened with extinction – EU plans ban

2023-05-28T11:03:10.429Z

Highlights: The EU Commission in Brussels is planning a ban on coffee capsules. Capsules that are not compostable will soon be banned and may no longer be put into circulation. The basis for the possible imminent ban is to be a new EU law on packaging and packaging waste. If the ban comes as planned, capsule manufacturers such as Nespresso would have to put their business in the European Union on a completely new footing. Nestlé has even responded to objections from environmentalists and plans to start producing paper coffee capsules by 2023.

Is the EU planning to ban coffee capsules? Largely unnoticed, a ban is being discussed in Brussels. It would have far-reaching consequences for consumers.

Brussels – Who doesn't know them? Well-portioned coffee capsules for coffee machines in your own home. If the capsules make it even easier for consumers to make coffee, but cause enormous mountains of waste, this could soon be stopped. According to a report in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), the EU Commission in Brussels is planning a ban on the capsules. At least those that cannot be composted.

Is the coffee hammer coming now? Coffee capsules are apparently threatened with extinction – EU plans ban

Is there an EU ban on coffee capsules coming soon? At least that's what the NZZ report says. Accordingly, capsules that are not compostable will soon be banned and may no longer be put into circulation. So far, the planned ban has been discussed "largely unnoticed" by the public. The basis for the possible imminent ban is to be a new EU law on packaging and packaging waste, it is said.

Coffee capsules on the verge of EU ban: 40 percent of households in Germany have a capsule machine

If the ban is imposed, it would have an enormous impact on private households in Germany. According to the NZZ, around 40 percent of households now have coffee machines that make coffee with these capsules. If the ban comes as planned, capsule manufacturers such as Nespresso would have to put their business in the European Union on a completely new footing and align it completely differently. Nestlé has even responded to objections from environmentalists and plans to start producing paper coffee capsules before the end of 2023.

Also with a greater focus on environmental protection, which is almost completely ignored in the current production situation. As a consequence, enormous – and above all unnecessary – mountains of garbage have formed since the triumph of capsule machines has found its way into German households.

Coffee capsules are apparently threatened with the end of the EU: Soon only compostable coffee capsules?

The European Union now apparently wants to put a stop to this and will soon only allow compostable coffee capsules in shops and homes. This is because the capsules made of aluminum and plastic are notorious for being harmful to the environment, although other coffee products produce a similar amount of waste.

However, it is not yet certain whether the coffee capsule ban will really come. To do this, the legislative process at EU level would first have to be completed. Industry associations, however, are already sounding the alarm and announcing resistance. Among others, the lobby association "European Coffee Federation" – to which Nestlé also belongs – wants to defend itself, should the law actually be tackled. From the point of view of the lobbyists, nothing would be gained for environmental protection by a ban on aluminum and plastic capsules. (jon)
