Do I need permission to have a garden greenhouse?
While it is very tempting to install a greenhouse in your garden, it is important to inquire to ensure that you respect the law. Indeed, depending on the size of the greenhouse, or the type of place, it may be necessary to apply for authorization. Let's see what the rules are:
- In a conventional sector: if the greenhouse has an area less than or equal to 5 square meters, no prior declaration (PD) is required. If the greenhouse has a height above the ground of between 1.80 meters and 4 meters, and if its floor area is less than 2000 square meters, a prior declaration of work must be filed. The procedures can be done on the internet or via forms to be submitted to the town hall;
- In a protected area: it is mandatory to file a prior declaration of work before building a garden greenhouse whose height above the ground is between 1.80 meters and 4 meters, and if its floor area is less than 2000 square meters. The steps are taken in the same way as in the previous case.
A protected area is defined in the following cases:
- Notable heritage sites;
- Surroundings of historical monuments;
- Sites classified or awaiting classification;
-Reserves;
- Areas intended to be classified in the heart of a future national park;
- Heart of national parks.
So check in which case you are in order to comply with the corresponding government guidelines.
Which garden greenhouse to choose according to your needs?
Before buying your garden greenhouse, carefully assess your needs in order to make the best possible choice. To do this, it is useful to consider various criteria that we will detail. First of all, the size of the garden greenhouse. It must be adapted to the varieties of plants you want to grow, but also to the space you have in your exterior. Also, be sure to ask for permissions when necessary. Then move on to the question of materials. The structure can be made of wood, metal or PVC. See according to the weather conditions and the use you want to make of it. When it comes to walls, several options are also available. You can choose polyethylene that can be used for about 3 years. Polycarbonate is more durable, around ten years. Finally, glass will last several decades and will be the most insulating of the three materials. Also look at the openings. Skylights will be useful to eliminate condensation. Choose a well-insulated door to keep the temperature in the greenhouse, either rigid or equipped with a zipper.
