Against all odds, Jennifer Lopez launched a brand of ready-to-drink cocktails on April 4. To promote her new drinks, low-calorie Spritz (with a low sugar level), the singer shared a promotional video revealing her in shorts and white shirt, sipping her famous spirit off the Riviera.
Again, this Monday, May 29, the interpreter of Jenny from the block unveiled a photo shoot inspired by the dolce vita of the 1970s, through which we discover her basking in the sun, a drink in hand. A publication that has revived the controversy around this new project "surprising" for some.

The lure of profit?
Astonishing, indeed, for a star who has always assured not to drink alcohol. The singer has also advocated this abstention as her most effective beauty secret. In an interview with InStyle magazine in June 2016, she said she followed a balanced diet of green vegetables and fish and explained that she "does not smoke, alcohol or coffee." Some then wonder about this confusing commercial choice. Lure of profit or change of mind?
"I'm so disappointed and confused by the talk she makes about the benefits of not drinking alcohol. Regardless of whether the ingredients are healthier, it is always alcohol containing carcinogenic toxins (...) It would have been really cool if she showed that you can still enjoy life without alcohol," one of her fans read under the post. And to continue: "The sober girls would have been very enthusiastic and would have seized the brand, which would have stood out. Now it's just another celebrity brand of alcohol." Note that Kylie Jenner also founded her Tequila brand, launched last xxx.

J-Lo's drink nevertheless differs a little, since its cocktails are made from natural ingredients and are less alcoholic than average. The brand's statement assures that a glass of Spritz corresponds to "the same amount of alcohol as a glass of wine". An argument that struggles to convince since the Aperol (alcohol that makes up the Spritz) amounts to 12.5% alcohol content, while some glasses of wine reach 14.5%. In addition, a glass of Jennifer Lopez's ready-to-drink cocktails would represent 110 fewer calories per serving.
Battle against alcoholism
To this first inconsistency was added another question about her husband, the actor Ben Affleck. Indeed, the latter sank into alcohol during his former marriage to Jennifer Garner, with whom he finally divorced in 2015. The actor has never hidden this addiction and has often testified to it in the media to better raise awareness among the public and his fans. Invited on the set of the Howard Stern Show, in December 2021, he had confided to feel trapped in his relationship with the actress. "I thought, 'I can't leave because of my children (Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, 9), but I'm unhappy, what can I do?" (...) So what I was doing was drinking a bottle of scotch tape and falling asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution."
Faced with her new husband's past alcoholism, did Jennifer Lopez make the right choice by embarking on a spirits brand? Not for his fans, anyway. "It's probably not the best way to support a sober husband"; "Her husband is fighting to stop drinking and she creates a brand of alcohol?"; "It's a really weird choice, she would have plenty of other ways to make money," reads the hundreds of negative comments that appear under the posts. Fortunately, some have nevertheless decided to support the 44-year-old artist, but not without a mixed feeling: "I understand, money is money," concluded one of them.
