Jam, cake or pure - raspberries are versatile. But how do they stay fresh for a long time? By storing them properly.
Whether as a snack or on pastries: raspberries are versatile and, above all, delicious fruits. The fruit is low in calories, but rich in vitamin C. 100 grams of raspberries contain 25 mg of the vitamin, which corresponds to almost 25 percent of the daily requirement. Traders and markets usually sell the fruit in trays – but should it also be stored in them? We reveal how raspberries stay fresh for as long as possible.
When is the raspberry in season?
If you pay attention to regional cultivation, you only have a short window of opportunity to buy raspberries sustainably. Because in this country you can only get German raspberries from June to September. Imported fruits sometimes have a long journey and thus a poor climate balance. In addition, regional raspberries taste better: the fruit comes fresh from the field, so to speak. As with the strawberry, there are also fields for raspberries in Germany where you can pick them yourself. Then your arrival and departure route also corresponds to that of the raspberry.

How to keep raspberries fresh for a long time
Raspberries can be frozen well. So they keep for up to six months. In the refrigerator, you should consume the raspberries after three days. © Rene Traut/Imago
Whether freshly picked or bought in the supermarket: The optimal storage of the raspberry determines how long the fruit will last. You should refrain from rinsing the fruit with water after purchase. As a result, you destroy the natural protective mantle. It is best to wait until shortly before eating.
Tip for longer shelf life:
Gently rinse raspberries with cold water in a colander. Then soak in a solution of one part vinegar essence and eight parts water. Then pat dry thoroughly. Store the raspberries covered with paper towels in an airtight container.
