(ANSA) - ROME, 29 MAY - 41 KFOR soldiers, including 11 Italians, were injured in serious clashes between NATO troops and Serb demonstrators in Zvecan, in northern Kosovo. Of the 11 Italian wounded, three are serious but not life-threatening: they would have suffered burns and fractures. ANSA learns this from informed sources.
The KFOR had intervened today in Zvecan to disperse the Serbian demonstrators who have been demonstrating in front of the local town hall since this morning to protest against the installation of the new ethnic Albanian mayor. The military used stun grenades, while demonstrators threw rocks, bottles and other objects at NATO troops.
Zvecan is one of the four largest municipalities in northern Kosovo with a Serb majority and new ethnic Albanian mayors were elected on 23 April due to the electoral boycott of Serbs. Similar protests have also taken place in Zubin Potok and Leposavic. (ANSA).
