Do you have a garden or a large terrace? Then you have the opportunity to make your fertilizer using your organ waste.

When gardening, fertilizer is often useful to facilitate the growth of different plants. Rather than buying it commercially, make it yourself at home by investing in a compost bin. It comes in the form of a large box, either plastic or wooden, into which you can throw most of your organic waste. The latter will then decompose and become fertilizer thanks to fermentation. You will then only have to mix the material obtained with your potting soil or the soil of your garden when you do your planting. A method that is both natural, economical, but also ecological since you will reduce your amount of household waste thrown away consistently. Where to place your composter in the garden?

    If a composter is very easy to use, it is enough to fill it and stir the mixture from time to time, it is however necessary to choose its location carefully, for several reasons. First of all, smells. We have all left fruit or vegetable peelings in the trash for a little too long and smelled unpleasant scents when they decompose. Well it's the same with compost, but potentially worse because the waste has been there for weeks, even months. It is therefore better to place your bin in a secluded corner, a little set back from your garden furniture, otherwise, you may not appreciate summer barbecues less. Your bin should not be in direct sunlight, but it should not be completely shaded either. Choose a place where it will be exposed differently depending on the time of day. Finally, avoid areas too subject to the wind that could dry out your compost, but also spread its smell throughout your garden, even if it is large.

    What waste should be put in the compost?

    A lot of waste can be put in compost, but there are some exceptions. Let's see the list of those you can throw in, and those that shouldn't.

    Waste to put in the compost:

    - Fruit and vegetable peelings;

    - Cheese rinds;

    - Spoiled or expired food, without its packaging;

    - Stale bread;

    - Coffee grounds and paper filters;

    - Eggshells and walnut shells;

    - Faded flowers and green plants;

    - Paper towels and handkerchiefs;

    - Sawdust and wood chips.

    some of which in smaller quantities:

    - Meat and fish waste;

    - Crustacean shells;

    - Spoiled dairy products;

    - Frying oil.

    Waste not to put in compost:

    - Fruit and vegetable labels;

    - The sweeps of the house and contents of the vacuum cleaners;

    - Polystyrene;

    - Large bones and hard shells;

    - Coal ash.

    So check well before filling your compost bin so as not to put prohibited elements that could alter it.

    When should the composter be emptied?

    Making compost doesn't happen overnight. The fermentation of organic waste takes time and you have to be patient before getting a fertilizer that can be used in your plants. Indeed, you will need between 7 and 9 months to obtain an effective compost. During this period, you will need to brew the waste from time to time, on average every 2 months. This makes it possible to mix the different layers of the compost so that the result is homogeneous and all the elements are broken down in the same way. You can do it by hand, with gloves so as not to get dirty, or with a shovel.
