A New York lawyer appeared in court to answer for the use by the artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT in research related to a case.
This is reported by the American media. The judge complained to the lawyer that six of the judgments cited were bogus.
The lawyer said he was not aware that the content produced by the artificial intelligence "was fake". One of the cases involved a man suing an airline for bodily injury. His team of lawyers presented a document citing past judgments justifying the lawsuit. But the airline found that they were non-existent.
It eventually emerged that the lawyer defending him, Steven A Schwartz, 30 years of experience, had used ChatGPT to look for precedents. The lawyer justified himself by saying that he had never used the chatbox before and assured that he will never again use artificial intelligence to "integrate" his research "without verifying the authenticity" of the contents.
