International Children's Day dates back to the World Conference in 1925. On this occasion, representatives from 54 different countries gathered to discuss the welfare of children. As a result of this conference, the Geneva Declaration on the Protection of Children was adopted. In the years that followed, some countries introduced their own Children's Day. Here we present children's and young adult books that are worth reading.

Cornelia Funke "The Green Kingdom"

Twelve-year-old Caspia has to spend the entire summer with her parents in Brooklyn. She hates big cities, especially New York. Too many people, too noisy, too dirty. In the children's room of the apartment that the family has rented, there is a chest of drawers in which Caspia discovers letters from a blind girl who traveled the world alongside her botanist father in the 50s and 60s and described plants in her very own way.

"The Green Kingdom" subtly deals with social issues such as environmental protection and sustainability. Readers have the freedom to solve the plant puzzles together with Caspia or to try it alone first. Along the way, they will learn a lot about both well-known and lesser-known plants, including information about their distribution, use, and mythological significance. Numerous illustrations and with a large font size, it is also fun for beginners. So it is a new adventure for Mrs. Honig and her bee colony, which leaves her somewhat perplexed at the beginning. The quarreling parents have made it very difficult for little Emma, so she moves from home into a tree. A book with a good ending. Highly recommended.
If there is a separation in a family with small children, "Zicke, Zacke, Trennungskacke" is a recommendable book.
