Pentecost 2023 is just around the corner and the anticipation for a long weekend is great. But which shops, supermarkets and discounters are open?
Munich – We all enthusiastically welcome a long weekend: Finally the opportunity to sleep well, spend quality time with the family and hopefully experience sunny weather. Fortunately, the next long weekend is just around the corner: Pentecost (May 28 and 29). But holidays are always accompanied by careful planning - especially when it comes to meals. After all, who wants to put up with long queues in supermarkets or stand in front of empty pantries? At what times do discounters and supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Penny, Edeka and Co. open their doors? And what to do if an ingredient for the feast is missing?

Just like Sunday, holidays are also considered days of rest. Therefore, supermarkets and discounters are obliged to keep their doors closed – this is what the law stipulates. This means that on Whit Sunday and Whit Monday there are hardly any opportunities for shopping. Only on Whit Saturday (27.05.2023) do shops, supermarkets and discounters such as Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Penny, Kaufland and Co. have regular opening hours.
This is what lies behind the meaning of Pentecost
Pentecost has its roots in Christianity and to this day is both a church and a public holiday. The feast is celebrated on the 49th day after Easter, ten days after the Ascension of Christ. This year, the Pentecost holidays fall on May 28 and 29.
Symbolically, the festival represents the 50 days that have passed since Jesus Christ's resurrection at Easter. Pentecost is celebrated as the feast of the Holy Spirit. According to Christian belief, the Holy Spirit binds all believers together. Thus, according to the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible, the disciples of Christ and the assembled believers were suddenly able to preach and speak in foreign languages.
Bakeries at Pentecost 2023: Here you can get fresh rolls on the holidays
While many take advantage of the holidays for a short vacation, employees of bakeries are still on duty. Although bakeries have different operating hours than on regular weekends, work is hardly interrupted anywhere. For example, bakeries in some states can open their doors for a few hours on Whit Sunday and not on Whit Monday, while in other states it is done exactly the opposite, according to 24rhein.de.
Forgotten something? Here are your last minute shopping options for Pentecost
If something has been forgotten – and in the end your favourite cake cannot be baked, even though guests have been invited – there are two alternatives: Either prepare another cake for which you usually always have the ingredients at home – or: consider a trip to the train station or airport. Don't worry – there's no need to flee from guests – shops at train stations and airports are also allowed to be open on Sundays and public holidays such as Pentecost. In addition, many petrol stations have expanded their range so that the basics for Pentecost can also be bought there.
