Stress, tension and dissatisfaction at work are constantly increasing – and yet many people hold on to their jobs. But it is not uncommon for a dismissal to be the better choice.

People in an employment relationship spend much of their time at work, together with colleagues and on daily tasks. If you are lucky, you are satisfied and do your job with joy. But there are also those who can't switch off after work, who have to deal with stress and problems, under- or over-demands or a non-functioning team in their everyday work. Supervisors and their behavior can also have a negative impact on the working atmosphere.

Anyone who finds himself in such a situation and becomes more and more unhappy in his position should act. First, you could talk to your superiors, but the last resort for many employees is probably dismissal. Something that, according to a study by Stepstone, four out of ten employees think about – several times a month. In some cases, this step should be taken even if no new job is certain afterwards.

In an interview with Handelsblatt, career experts Sabine Votteler and Isabell Prophet give tips on how to stop postponing your dismissal and how to make the jump from the company.

Identify fears that speak against dismissal

For most employees, no matter how dissatisfied they may be, the resignation (here's a sample template) is scary. After all, you have become accustomed to everyday life and your tasks in the company. "People prefer what they know to the unknown," Isabell Prophet told Handelsblatt. A new team, new structures, fear of not belonging – all these can be reasons for postponing a termination.

Be sure to be clear about what you are really afraid of. Once the fears have been formulated, you can counteract them and take appropriate measures.

Clarifying one's own values

Sabine Votteler, former manager in various companies, talks in an interview about a turning point in her professional life: "In my permanent position, I realized at some point: None of what I do here corresponds to my most important values. It was a great relief to understand that."

Ask yourself what you value in your everyday work and compare these values with your current situation. Maybe clear communication is important to you, but you have to chase details at the moment. You appreciate it when you can work independently and you are trusted, but the current employer wants to control everything. If one's own values do not match the current professional situation, this can be the necessary push to finally hand over the resignation.

Asking questions – at the right moment and in the right place

Take a look around your circle of acquaintances, maybe someone works in a field or in a company that interests you? Then it's time to ask about experiences. What is the team like, what tasks are common in the position, what is the working atmosphere like or similar. If you don't have a corresponding acquaintance, you can establish contacts, for example via the career portals Linkedin or Xing, or browse through rating portals such as Kununu.

It would be advisable to short-circuit with a close contact person in the current job. "They could be overwhelmed by the idea and react negatively because they themselves are affected by it," Sabine Votteler advises Handelsblatt.

Applying for the new job

When looking for a new job, you should take your time if possible. Are you wondering what is important to you in a new potential employer: flexible working hours, after-work events or team events? Or is a good company name and prestige enough? According to the experts, those who deal with the question of their own career aspirations for a longer period of time have a better chance of improving when changing jobs.
