After work, the socks smoke and a foul smell escapes from the shoes? These tips will help against cheese feet.
Berlin \u2012 Especially in summer, many people suffer from sweaty feet. Despite cotton socks and an insole in the shoe, the feet smell like "cheese foot". The unpleasant smell is caused by bacteria that live on the surface of our skin and break down sweat into smelly components. Sweat itself doesn't stink at all.
It is the bacteria that decompose the sweat and produce, among other things, butyric acid, which in turn smells penetrating and pungent, explains dermatologist Marion Moers-Carpi in the Apotheken-Umschau. Shoes prevent sweat from evaporating. The result is something like a sweat chamber. "An ideal condition for foot odor," says the expert.
Sweaty feet: tips for the summer against bad foot odor
Especially in summer and at high temperatures, the feet are not adequately ventilated. True, in pharmacies there are various means to combat foot odor. They contain, for example, aluminum salts, tannins or medicinal plants such as sage and oak bark and can ensure that the sweat glands do not produce so much sweat in the first place.
But be careful: creams with herbal ingredients help the feet of one, but lead to allergic contact reactions in other people, warns the Ärzte-Zeitung, citing Italian researchers. Expert Moers-Carpi therefore advises a lotion with aluminum chloride. It contracts the sweat ducts and the sweat glands cannot release the sweat.

This is how sweaty feet are formed
Feet have many sweat glands. These become active for a variety of reasons, such as high outside temperatures, stress or due to a hormonal imbalance. Sweaty feet occur when feet are not adequately ventilated, for example because they are stuck in airtight shoes for a longer period of time. Closed-toe shoes prevent sweat from evaporating.

Cheese feet in warm temperatures: foot and shoe deodorants help
Of course, good foot hygiene with soap and water also helps against odors. A cool foot bath is a special freshness kick for the feet, especially in summer temperatures. With a daily foot bath in sage tea, you can even regulate the activation of the sweat glands. If you prefer a deodorant, the dermatologist recommends a foot deodorant with aluminum chloride or alcohol.
This reduces sweat decomposition. There are also antibacterial shoe deodorants in drugstores and shoe stores. Powder can also absorb beads of sweat well. It is placed directly on the sole of the foot and between the toes.
A popular home remedy for cheese feet is a 15-minute foot bath in apple cider vinegar. It is diluted with water in a ratio of one to two-thirds. If none of these tips help against a pungent odor, there is always the option of asking a doctor for advice.
