Oatmeal promotes tomato growth as a natural fertilizer

2023-05-31T08:11:26.882Z

Highlights: Oatmeal contains numerous minerals such as zinc, magnesium and phosphorus. Magnesium promotes root growth and the absorption of nitrogen. Phosphorus, in turn, is good for flower formation. The calcium contained in oatmeal ensures strong, stable shoots that can better bear fruit later. Oatmeal is already suitable for growing small tomato plants. But as oat milk or pithy soil additive, older plants can also be supplied with it. The flakes are gradually broken down and release nutrients into the soil.

Oatmeal is not only healthy for humans. With their valuable ingredients, they also help tomatoes as organic fertilizers.

Why shouldn't something that's so nutritious for us also be good for plants? Oatmeal contains numerous minerals such as zinc, magnesium and phosphorus. Tomatoes, in particular, are a very nutrient-hungry vegetable. Sounds like a good match.

The advantages of oatmeal as a plant-based fertilizer are, on the one hand, that you usually have it in the house anyway and, on the other hand, that it is not possible to over-fertilize the plants. Of course, the home remedy is also inexpensive.

Oatmeal is already suitable for growing the small tomato plants. But as oat milk or pithy soil additive, older plants can also be supplied with it: Magnesium promotes root growth and the absorption of nitrogen. Phosphorus, in turn, is good for flower formation. The calcium contained in oatmeal ensures strong, stable shoots that can better bear fruit later. In addition, pests then find it more difficult to penetrate the plant.

To produce a liquid oat milk or oatmeal water as fertilizer, proceed as follows:

  • Finely grind three tablespoons of oatmeal in a blender and mix in an empty bottle with a liter of water.
  • Leave the decoction at room temperature for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Drain the liquid through a sieve and pour in water in a 1:1 ratio.
  • Water the liquid fertilizer to the root area every two days, depending on the size of the plant. Add the oatmeal to the compost or use as mulch.

Alternative: Direct fertilization with oatmeal

The oatmeal can also be used directly as fertilizer by spreading it loosely in the root area and watering it. The flakes are gradually broken down and release nutrients into the soil. However, always make sure that they do not clump together and possibly form mold. If you want to avoid this right away, you can also finely grind the oatmeal and apply it to the soil.

With this oatmeal life hack, all other vegetable plants can also be supplied. However, if the plants are larger, this natural form of fertilization alone is no longer sufficient, especially for heavy eaters such as tomatoes or cabbage.
