Munich – Netflix is one of the market leaders in streaming services in Germany. A thorn in Netflix's side is account sharing. In the future, this will be subject to a fee and thus secure income. However, there are ways to bypass this lock.

Lockdowns threaten: Netflix takes action against account sharing

Last year, Netflix announced that it would no longer tolerate account sharing. Netflix itself spoke of almost 100 million users who simply use the accounts of their friends or family and therefore do not pay for them. According to Netflix's terms and conditions, all users of an account must live in the same household. In the future, 4.99 euros will be paid per user who does not live in the account holder's own household.

As Netflix announced, no GPS data is collected during checks. Instead, the streaming service relies on all users sharing the same IP address. All devices used should therefore be connected to the same WLAN and thus verified. As a result, streaming must be done at least every 31 days on this network with the home IP address. This can ensure that Netflix can also be used while traveling. However, Netflix would prevent people living in different parts of Germany from sharing an account.

These methods can be used to bypass the lock on account sharing

As with many rules, there are ways to circumvent them. Since Netflix only wants to use the IP addresses of users in its action against account sharing, it can be created artificially. VPN access can be set up on your own router – technically speaking, this is not a difficulty. If Netflix users want to log into the account from other locations, they can use the VPN to copy the IP address of the home account. Netflix is therefore suggested that a user is in the household of the main account, although this is not the case.

In addition to a physical VPN server, there are a variety of cloud-based VPN services that can be set up from home. Well-known VPN services are OpenVPN and WireGuard. In many modern routers, remote access can now be set up without a VPN. The exact instructions vary from provider to provider, previous technical knowledge is usually not absolutely necessary. Alternatively, users can log in to the account holder's home network once a month. Netflix itself has not yet commented on which control mechanisms will be used to specifically check account sharing.
