(ANSA) - NEW YORK, JUNE 01 - The Biden administration is taking new countermeasures in response to Moscow's violations of the New Start on nuclear power. These include the revocation of visas for Russian inspectors.
The United States did not provide its biennial nuclear data update on March 30 after Russia failed to provide its own. The START treaty requires Moscow and Washington to exchange databases in March and September each year.
"The countermeasures are in line with international law.
They are proportionate and reversible", says the US State Department, stressing that it has "notified Russia of countermeasures in advance and expressed the desire and readiness" to remove them and "fully adopt the mandate if Moscow returns to respect it. The United States remains ready to work constructively with Russia to resume the implementation of New Start."
At the end of January, Russian President Vladimir Putin enacted the law to suspend New Start, the last bilateral treaty with the United States on the limitation of nuclear weapons. (ANSA).
