"He needed a buddy" – friendship between baby cat and dog goes to the heart

2023-06-02T08:21:37.631Z

Highlights: Golden retriever Lincoln and baby cat Charlie prove the opposite. The video of the beginning of the unlikely friendship between dog and cat has already received over a million clicks and almost 140,000 likes on the social media channel of owner Kate Sherwood. A study by the Italian Università degli Studi in Perugia, which surveyed pet owners who owned both dogs and cats, found that the majority of non-native pets play with each other – including sleeping together. Only one cute detail could be confirmed: While the velvet paws ignore their roommates more often, the two furry noses are inseparable and only experience everyday life together.

Dogs and cats don't get along – they say. Golden retriever Lincoln and baby cat Charlie prove the opposite. And their shared history has only just begun.

Whether it's a deer that meets a dog every year, a monkey that cuddles with a cat or even a cow that prefers to cuddle with its feline friend: Unusual animal friendships fascinate us again and again.

Even the unequal best buddies Lincoln and Charlie are currently melting the hearts of TikTok users with their friendship. The video of the beginning of the unlikely friendship between dog and cat has already received over a million clicks and almost 140,000 likes on the social media channel of owner Kate Sherwood (@lincolnandcharlie):

As the US news magazine Newsweek learned from owner Kate, she found baby cat Charlie on an animal adoption website: "I came across Charlie's cute face and applied immediately," says the proud cat mom. In order not to exclude Goldie Lincoln, he should be included in the adoption from the very beginning. So, together with her partner, she decided to take the Golden Retriever to Charlie's pickup.

First moments of getting to know Golden Retriever and cat are heartwarming

Already during the two-hour drive back, Lincoln is very nervous about the meowing kitten that Kate and her partner have just adopted. Curious, he sniffs the transport box and gently rests his nose on the anxious, black and white ball of fur. Incidentally, the monochrome Charlie also owes its cute name to its color: It is named after Charlie Chaplin, owner Kate reveals on TikTok.

When he arrives home, the male dog is overwhelmed by exuberance: out of sheer play instinct, the big furry nose scares the tiny kitten so much that Charlie flees under the sofa to get to safety. The playful Godie barks impatiently after Kate has rescued the anxious Charlie from under the sofa, as if to say, "Now don't be like that, I just want to play with the cute newcomer."

At home together: baby cat Charlie and Golden Retriever Lincoln become friends

But appearances are deceptive: the two four-legged friends quickly become inseparable friends. "Lincoln was so curious and gentle with him from the beginning, and after proving to Charlie for a few days that he was not a danger, they began to play and cuddle with each other," says the American about the beginnings of the unusual friendship. Even when animal mom Kate stopped interfering, the male dog behaved lovingly, as she writes on TikTok: "He was very gentle and kind to him as soon as I stopped interfering."

The baby cat quickly thaws out and bravely approaches his big brother. Together they play, cuddle and sleep.

"They're like brothers," Sherwood tells the American magazine. "Charlie grew up with Lincoln, so he's kind of acting like him and thinking he's a dog. I've never seen a dog and cat so close. It's really cute!"

Do dogs and cats really not get along?

According to a 2020 study by the Italian Università degli Studi in Perugia, which surveyed pet owners who owned both dogs and cats, the majority of non-native pets play with each other – including sleeping together. A natural enmity between the two animal species would therefore not exist, as Zeit Online reports. Only one cute detail could be confirmed: While the dogs lick their sibling cats more often, the diva-like velvet paws ignore their dog roommates more often.

In the meantime, the two furry noses are inseparable and only experience their everyday life together: "They run downstairs with me every morning to get a treat, and if Charlie is lucky, I'll put him in his harness, and he'll be allowed to go outside with Lincoln to watch the squirrels," says owner Kate. "Then we go upstairs to their playroom and I play with them for a while."

The users are off their socks in view of the unique love of animals and express their feelings in the comments:

  • "This is his kitten now. 🥰🥰🥰"
  • "Every golden boy needs a kitten. 🥹🥹"
  • "He looks 😂😄 so proud at the end."
  • "He just wanted his kitten to love him because he fell in love right away. 😍 Come on, kittens! Playtime!"
  • "Golden retrievers are the most caring. 🥰"

No wonder the Golden Retriever is so good with cats: "We had another cat who we learned in September 2021 had stomach cancer when she was only 7 years old," Kate Sherwood told the US magazine. "He died a month later. I was heartbroken." It wasn't until Charlie the cat that Lincoln finally found a new playmate.

On her TikTok channel, Kate keeps fans of the two animal roommates up to date on the unusual love story.
