The cycle of novels focuses mainly on the struggle between the forces of "good" and "evil". The story begins with the farmer's son Rand al'Thor growing up in the isolated Two Rivers. However, together with some friends, he has to flee from a sudden attack by shadow creatures called Trollocs, who have long been considered legends and mythical creatures in this region. During their escape, Rand al'Thor and his friends receive assistance from Moiraine, an Aes Sedai, a type of magician who rules the feminine side of the Force called Saidar. Only women are able to use power, as the male side, Saidin, is polluted by the stain of evil.

In the secluded village of Emondsfelde, people still tell the old stories about the Dark King and the mages of the Aes Sedai, who turn the wheel of time. No one suspects how much truth there is in these legends. But then bloodthirsty Trollocs, the Dark King's henchmen, invade the village, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. The magician Moiraine helps friends Egwene, Rand, Perrin and Mat escape at the last minute, sensing that one of them will change the fate of the world.
