Some wines from Piedmont never hurt. And this time the wines of the Fontanfreda winery from the town of Serra Lunga d'Alba, in Piedmont, northern Italy, part of the growing area of the famous Barolo wine. And the winery does offer significant and appreciated Barolo wines.

All of Avi Efrati's

wine columns in the current tasting have five wines - two white and three red. In the bricks "Gavi di Gavi" which gives excellent value for money and "Dartana, Colli Tortanzi Timuraso", also known as "White Barolo", which is tall and impressive. In the reds, Barbara D'Alba is basic and worthy, and two tall ones - a particularly successful barbaresco and Barolo, one of the winery's flagship wines. Cheers!

Fontanfreda, Platinum, Barbera Di Alba 2021

An unambiguous touch of licorice. Fontanfreda, Platinum, Barbera Di Alba 2021 (Photo: Punta Freda Winery)

Without a few words about astringency it is impossible: 100% Barbara from vineyards in the Alba region, Piedmont. 12 months of aging in large oak barrels. Very dark red color. In the nose red fruit and spices. Medium body. 14% alcohol by volume.

How much?85 NIS.

Best for: Beef starters (tartar, carpaccio), steak minut, grilled.

From the reviewer: a medium body that holds well a good fruit, rich but not too busy and a tingle of plenty of spices. Dryness, refinement, an unambiguous touch of licorice and a high gastronomic coefficient.

Value for money:4/5 (very good).

In five words: Barbara D'Alba is very successful of its kind.

Really not much

What more would we ask for wine at this ridiculous price?

Fontanfreda, Gavi Di Gavi 2022

Lots of complexity. Fontanfreda, Gavi Di Gavi 2022 (Photo: Punta Freda Winery)

Without a few words about astringency it is impossible:Corteza grapes from Gavi di Gavi, Piedmont. Three months stay in stainless steel tanks and large oak barrels. In the nose citrus and white fruit. Light-medium body. 12.5% alcohol by volume.

How much?95 NIS.

Best for: fish and seafood, with an emphasis on starters - tartar, carpaccio, ceviche - and mains in Mediterranean sauces.

Reviewer's note: Citrus, herbaceous, mineral, good dryness, lots of complexity, nuances and coefficient and interest considering the relative basicity and pricing, which provides excess of a hundred.

Value for money:3.5/5 (good).

In six words: not pretentious but very tasty. For those who understand.

Fontanfreda, Derthana, Colli Tortonesi, Timorasso 2021 DOC

Great accuracy. Fontanfreda, Derthana, Colli Tortonesi, Timorasso 2021 DOC (Photo: Punta Freda Winery)

Without a few words about astringency you can't:Timurasu grapes Macaulay Tortonzi, Piedmont. 10 months in stainless steel containers, on top of the yeast. Greenish golden color. Aromatic nose with plenty of white and tropical fruit. Medium body. 14% alcohol by volume.

How much?150 NIS.

Best for: fish, seafood, oysters and white meats.

From the reviewer:Very fine aromatics, tropical fruit and white fruit that attract the palate, sharp and precise acidity, good dryness. Great accuracy. A refined and harmonious wine, which as time passes from its opening, develops on the palate. It is worth sipping it about an hour after it opens and not too cold. Only in this way is His full glory revealed. Excellent.

Value for money:2.5/5 (real).

In four words: "White Barolo" that does not fail.

Fontanfreda, Platinum, Barbaresco 2019 DOCG

Plenty of fruit. Fontanfreda, Platinum, Barbaresco 2019 DOCG (Photo: Punta Freda Winery)

Without a few words about astringency it is impossible:Nebiolo grapes from Barbaresco, Piedmont. 12 months of aging in Slovenian oak barrels and an additional six months of aging in a bottle. Darkest red color. The nose has red, black fruit and plenty of spices. Medium-full body. 13.5% alcohol by volume.

How much?280 NIS.

Best for: Large cut of beef aged on bone.

Reviewer's note: Not too full but well built, as a muscular spine. Fruit abundance, powerful and bursting, with an even greater abundance of seasoning. Barbaresco is successful and relatively accessible, which even experienced sippers will enjoy without difficulty because it is not a real extrovert.

Value for money:2.5/5 (realistically. expensive but realistically priced for a wine of its kind)

in five words: Barbaresco designed for a wide range of sippers.

Fontnafreda, Serralunga Di Alba, Barolo 2019 DOCG

Without a few words about astringency you can't: Nebiolo grapes from the Serralunga d'Alba vineyard in Barolo, Piedmont. 12 months of aging in Barrick (225 liters) and 12 months in large barrels (2000 liters). Opaque dark red color, prone to black. The nose has red, black fruit and plenty of spices. Full body. 14% alcohol by volume.

How much?300 NIS.

Best for: Invested meals based on beef, lamb and lamb.

From the reviewer:full body, lots of rich fruit, plenty of spices, softness, velvety, harmonious; And in Barolo, as in Barolo, also a note of sweetness. It is still a burden and can become obsolete for at least five to seven years. Will delight fans of the genre right now, but at least another year in the bottle will get more out of it.

Value for money: 2.5/5 (realistically. expensive but realistically priced for a wine of its kind).

In a dozen words: a decidedly good mainstream Barolo of its kind that would be good if he got some rest. Shop and hold back.
