In times of a shortage of skilled workers, applicants have good prospects in many industries. So-called boomerang employees could also benefit from this.
Many companies are currently looking for new employees. In some industries, there is a real shortage of skilled workers. This opens up new opportunities for applicants. Quite a few companies also rely on job returnees when recruiting – i.e. former employees who apply to the company again after a certain period of time and are therefore often referred to as so-called boomerang employees.

Boomerang employees already know the processes in the company
It could be worthwhile for both sides: According to a report by Businessinsider.de, studies show that returnees perform better and are more committed than newly hired employees. This is due to the fact that the returnees are already familiar with many tasks and can, for example, benefit from the networks within the old company. Also, you no longer have to train the former employee at great expense, and both sides usually know what they can expect from each other. Of course, each case must be considered individually. Some returnees apply for a job similar to the previous one, while others apply for another position in the company.
Job returnees: Finding a new role with the employer
Basically, according to job experts, there can be many advantages in your job if you return to your former employer after a few years in another job or after a few stopovers. However, it also carries risks. Before you start again with your ex-employer, you should be aware of why you left, according to the advice of career coach Bernd Slaghuis, according to an earlier report by the German Press Agency (dpa). You should only return if something has changed in this area, for example in the staffing.
There is another aspect that could play a role. "It's hard to take on a new role and be seen as such by your colleagues." You should be aware of this and prepare accordingly. How do I want to reposition myself? This can be done through new topics and areas of responsibility, but also through one's own behavior in the team. You should talk about it early, the expert advised, according to the dpa report.

Possible salary increase – applicants bring a lot of know-how with them
Potential returnees should definitely use their know-how in the job interview and, if necessary, renegotiate the salary. In the meantime, many so-called boomerang employees have gained valuable new experience. When negotiating salaries, applicants should not leave this aspect unmentioned.
