Inflation and war are having an impact on the cost of living – and on health insurance contributions. AOK, DAK, Barmer and Co.: Which price-performance ratio is best?

Frankfurt – The wave of inflation that accompanied us into 2023 caused all prices to skyrocket. While food prices gradually level off as inflation falls, regular payments are less dynamically adjustable. Among other things, gym membership fees and rent payments became more expensive. But what about health insurance contributions? We take a look at the prices and services of popular health insurance companies à la AOK, DAK, Barmer and Co.

With regard to the fixed contribution rate, there is initially good news: At 14.06 percent, it has not changed compared to the previous year. Due to the additional contribution, which health insurance companies can set themselves, it is worth taking a closer look at the prices and their changes compared to the previous year. But other factors should not be ignored either: Is the price-performance ratio convincing or should you consider changing your health insurance company?

Contribution rates for health insurance companies

The contribution rate for health insurance funds consists of a fixed general contribution rate of the statutory health insurance and an individual additional contribution. The resulting percentages between 15.44 and 16.59 percent (in 2023) refer to one's own income.

Price comparison of the ten largest health insurance companies: This is how much prices have changed

Initially, the focus is on price changes. The ten health insurance companies that have the most members in Germany according to krankenkassen.de are considered: Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) with 11,000 members to AOK Nordwest with 3,000 members. Here's how much contributions have changed in 2023 compared to last year:

Only the two largest health insurance companies, TK and Barmer, have not increased their individual additional amounts. Otherwise, the increases are up to three percentage points. In the case of the AOK health insurance companies, it is noticeable that the contribution payments vary from state to state. According to krankenkassen.de, the price range of health insurance contribution rates between 15.44 and 16.59 percent is highest in North Rhine-Westphalia. Peak values of 16.59 percent are also achieved by health insurance companies in Bremen, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein.
