Relief benefits for persons in need of care with a care level of 1 to 5: Under these conditions, you are entitled to 125 euros.
Frankfurt – In Germany, there are numerous people in need of care who wish not to go to a nursing home. They are often cared for on an outpatient basis by relatives or nursing services. In such cases, there may be an entitlement to relief benefits that can provide financial support to people in need of care.
Who is entitled to relief benefits for outpatient care?
Elderly people who move into a nursing home because they can no longer take care of themselves have to reckon with various costs. In contrast, seniors who receive outpatient care in their own home or apartment can take advantage of relief services. These services are designed to provide additional support to those in need of care and their relatives. For example, it is possible for trained caregivers to take over part of the home care for a few hours a month.

In order to relieve the burden on family caregivers, they are to be provided with various care services. Especially for people suffering from dementia, these offers can work wonders, as they often involve creative activities that preserve one's own abilities. The childcare services include support in the household, exercise offers, walks or participation in singing and handicraft groups. Every person in need of care with a care level of 1 to 5 who lives at home is entitled to these relief benefits.
How you get the 125 Euro relief benefit for care
According to the consumer advice centre, there is generally an entitlement to relief benefits in the amount of 125 euros. If this amount is not sufficient, up to 40 percent of the care benefits in kind can instead be used for care and relief services. According to Section 36 SGB XI, care benefits in kind include professional home care assistance that provides physical care, support and household services. Depending on the degree of care, the care benefits in kind can be up to 2095 euros.
The 125 euros relief benefits can be used for this purpose, for example:
- once a week help with household chores or shopping
- once a week visit to a singing and handicraft group at a welfare association
- once a week visit to an exercise program
- once a week walk with a volunteer
- if necessary, accompaniment to the doctor, to authorities and to concerts by volunteers
In order to assert the so-called conversion claim, an application to the long-term care insurance fund is required. For relief benefits, on the other hand, there is no need to submit a separate application. As soon as a need for care has been determined and the person is cared for at home, there is an entitlement to relief benefits. However, it is important to keep the relevant invoices. The cost of the benefits must first be borne by the patient, but the long-term care insurance will reimburse the amount after the invoices have been submitted. The consumer advice centre provides a sample letter for this purpose.
