Rewe customer looks at receipts and is shocked: "I bought bananas made of gold"

Highlights: A Rewe customer noticed on her expensive receipt that something could not be right. On TikTok, the woman vented her frustration and posted a video. The TikTok community reacted very differently to the video about the overpriced Rewe purchase. "Who put the label on it? Certainly not the cashier," said one user. "I would let you know, 99.99 euros/kg is a system error, because you have no influence on the price per kilo on the scales," said another.

Shopping in the supermarket or discount store is often not cheap these days. However, one customer experienced an extreme price development at Rewe.

Munich – Shopping in the supermarket or discounter has recently become more expensive for customers. The energy crisis and the Ukraine war, as well as inflation, were mostly cited as factors when it came to rising food prices. When looking at the receipt, customers often had little joy. But at least the price of some products at Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland or Netto is now going down again.

Rewe customer buys normal-priced groceries – but supermarket receipt shows over 170 euros

For a supermarket customer, however, shopping became a very expensive pleasure. Especially when you consider what kind of product caused the payment amount on their receipt to explode. On TikTok, the woman vented her frustration and posted a video. On it you can see a hand holding a receipt.

The font and lettering of the receipt suggest that the user was a customer of a Rewe store. Several products such as mozzarella, tomatoes, cucumbers, cream cheese and eggs can be read on the folded receipt. However, all the items mentioned only cost amounts between 49 cents and 4.99 euros. Nevertheless, the total amount appears to be the proud amount of 170.59 euros. How did this happen?

The Rewe customer answers this question herself in the TikTok video. And sitting in the car – receipt in hand – she explains the reason for her costly purchase. "Normally, I never take receipts with me," she begins, "but then I thought, 'This purchase could never have cost so much.'" The camera pans over to a well-filled box, which, however, at first glance only contains normal-priced food.

But then the camera moves on and captures a bunch of bananas. "Oh, I bought bananas made of gold," the user says ironically. When you look at the self-adhesive price tag on the 806-gram bananas (probably four to six pieces), you can hardly believe his eyes. They cost an unbelievable 80.59 euros. The price per kilo is 99.99 euros.

Meanwhile, the TikTok community reacted very differently to the video about the overpriced Rewe purchase. "Who put the label on it? Certainly not the cashier," said one user. "Didn't the cashier notice that?" an amused user asked. "Was a young trainee," the author of the TikTok post stated.

However, the Rewe customer also had to listen to some criticism. "Well, I would have been suspicious at the checkout, not just in the car," commented one TikTok user. "How can you only become aware of it in the car with about 80 euros too much?" it was also said. Or also: "You already notice something like that at the scales or checkout." Others suspected that the root of all evil lay elsewhere. "I would let you know, 99.99 euros/kg is a system error, because you have no influence on the price per kilo on the scales," said one user. "Wrong PLU typed. Maybe I had a transposed number in it," was another assumption.

User notices crucial detail in TikTok video that makes the case appear different

One or the other not entirely serious explanation was also found in the comments under the TikTok video. "With inflation, it's believable," one user quipped. "Must have been a posh discounter" or "That's the regular price for hand-washed organic bananas from farmer Frederick," others joked. "Got hold of shares from the plantation," another wrote, laughing.

Meanwhile, one user noticed a detail in the video that put things in a completely different light. In the driver's seat, a wallet could be seen below the wheel. "But a wallet for 300 euros," the TikTok user commented on the post, along with emojis crying tears of laughter. Indeed, the wallet featured the look of the high-end Louis Vuitton brand. According to the online shop, the corresponding model currently costs 320 euros (as of June 2, 2023). However, it is not possible to tell beyond doubt from the video whether it is an original or a much cheaper imitation.

Recently, a supermarket customer in the Netherlands was not in the mood to laugh at all. He showed his almost empty shopping cart and found the horrendous price for its contents only "absurd". (kh)
