Highlights: Cherries can also be pitted with a chopstick and an empty glass bottle. This may take a little longer, but it's not that difficult. Pitting cherries with the Thermomix is not suitable for all purposes. The fruits do not retain their shape, but that doesn't matter if you want to prepare sour cherry jam from them, for example. For many connoisseurs, cherries are simply part of summer. For example, if you want to bake a delicious cherry pie, or a juicy Kirschenplotzer (which is also often referred to as Kirschenmichel depending on the region), you have to pit the cherries beforehand. If you don't have a cherry pitter at hand now, you can use another method, which will certainly take a little longer. With the help of an empty bottle and a stick. With a little practice, it's not that difficult. But there are other options.

1. Pit cherries with chopsticks and bottle

With this method, you will need an empty glass bottle, for example, an empty soda bottle, which you will thoroughly clean beforehand. It is important that the cherry fits on the neck of the bottle. You will also need a chopstick (or alternatively a straw, which must be narrow enough). Now place the cherry on the bottle opening and hold it firmly with one hand. With your other hand, place the chopstick in the middle of the top center of the cherry and press it down. This is how the cherry stone ends up in the bottle.

2. Pit cherries with a sharp kitchen knife

Some prefer to use a paring knife to pit the cherries, which can be a bit more cumbersome, as you first have to cut the cherries in half to get to the pit.

3. Pitting cherries with the Thermomix?

A faster method of pitting the cherries is not suitable for all purposes. And with the Thermomix. The fruits do not retain their shape, but that doesn't matter if you want to prepare sour cherry jam from them, for example. The sustainability portal Utopia explains how it works: Put the cherries in the machine and let the device run on the low to medium setting for about three minutes. Then put the mixture in a large-mesh sieve to separate the seeds from the rest.

Cherries can also be frozen well, but then you should leave the stone in the fruit so that the aroma is preserved.
