Kassel – Philip Morris International is the world's largest producer of tobacco products. As the company announced, no more Marlboro cigarettes will be sold in the future. On social media, the project is viewed critically.

Marlboro cigarettes will soon be history – reactions are critical

Already in recent years, Philip Morris announced several times that the production of Marlboro cigarettes could stop. In 2021, it was said that the tobacco giant wants to stop selling the glow sticks within the next decade. "Our ambition is to generate half of our revenue from smoke-free products by 2025," CEO Jacek Olczak announced. This plan has now also been confirmed by the CEO of Philip Morris in Germany and Austria, Markus Essing.

"We will get out of the cigarette business and only offer low-risk products," Essing said at an event in Berlin. In particular, it will be about the Iqos brand, the supposedly healthier alternative to cigarettes. With e-cigarettes, people no longer smoke, but vape. A liquid is heated and the resulting vapor is inhaled. It is said to be less harmful because there is no combustion. On social media, the step from the classic cigarette to the e-cigarette is viewed critically.

Just for sales? Marlboro exit viewed critically on social media

The supposed end of Marlboro is generally seen as positive on social media. At the same time, it is assumed that Philip Morris does not think about the health of its customers at all: "The concept of nicotine addiction continues to be the core of the brand. If addicts can now smoke longer and need a high-priced device, then the signs are still green," writes a Twitter user critically about the Iqos brand. The use of e-cigarettes is already restricted in many countries.

As early as 2019, Philip Morris was sharply criticized for a social media campaign in which a 21-year-old woman was used to promote her Iqos brand. Although no laws have been broken, according to its own guidelines, the company is committed to not advertising with influencers under the age of 25. Other voices on Twitter criticized Philip Morris for the Marlboro exit: "What about us adults who are aware of the health risks and still want to smoke?"
