For those who have an eye for detail, clean borders of beds and the lawn are a treat for the eye. And this can be done with this guide without much work.
Many feel most comfortable in a tidy garden. A gardener who is close to nature does not exclude this, but shows a preference for clear lines and an appreciation with which one rewards oneself for garden maintenance and work done. In any case, the difference between a weed-covered border and a neatly trimmed lawn edge is obvious – it's the freestyle after duty. And even every beginner succeeds without much effort.
Step by step to clean bed and lawn edges
How to create a clear demarcation of flower beds and lawn edges in just a few steps was revealed by architect Ray Baker to Fine Gardening magazine. Here are the instructions:
1. Create an edge

The first step is to cut the edge. When creating a new bed, it is best to mark the desired lines with a garden hose or a rope. If you want to beautify an existing bed, you can get started right away. There are two methods for this:
- Method 1: Work with a spade or a (crescent) edge cutter along the line you set. In curves, you have to be careful while moving so that the line remains smooth.
- Method 2: Advanced users can use a lawn edging roller that cuts an even yet flexible line into the ground thanks to its wheels.
2: Remove the turf
Once you have determined your edging, deepen it to ten to 15 centimeters with a spade so that the edge forms a 90-degree angle if possible. This also applies to the inside of the bed when you recreate it. You can easily remove the loosened sod.

3. Cleaning the edge
Place scissors vertically on the trench wall and cut off the remaining blades of grass from the edge. Be careful not to hold the scissors horizontally, otherwise the right angle of the edge will easily be nullified. This step can be repeated several times during the gardening season to keep the edges straight.
4. Mulch the bed
Apply a layer of mulch about five centimeters thick to the bed. This not only suppresses weeds, but also delimits the edge well in terms of color. It's best to mulch all the way to the edge of the lawn to create a gentle slope from the edge to the bed – but that's a matter of taste.
