Heat pump – yes or no? This is how satisfied consumers are

2023-06-04T04:41:31.682Z

Highlights: British organization Nesta conducted a study among heat pump owners in their country. 73 percent said they were just as satisfied with the heat pump as they were with the heating system they had previously used. 70 percent stated that they were satisfied with all or almost all aspects of the heater – apart from the running costs. The strongest point here was safety with 91 percent, followed by the treatment of hot water (89 percent) and the reliability of heat pumps (85 percent). The heating of the rooms, energy efficiency, user-friendliness and maintenance costs were also rated positively by the majority.

At least since Robert Habeck's planned heating law, they have been on everyone's lips: heat pumps. What experiences have consumers had with the devices?

Bremen/London – Some people still have concerns about heat pumps. They may also be put off by how much the heaters cost. Others have already installed a heat pump at home. Now the British organization Nesta has conducted a study among heat pump owners in their country. She wanted to find out how satisfied they were with the devices.

  • 73 percent of heat pump owners said they were just as satisfied with the heat pump as they were with the heating system they had previously used – or even more satisfied
  • There was no evidence that this satisfaction is dependent on the age of the house
  • When people moved into a house that had already installed a heat pump, their prior knowledge of the device varied
  • Overall, despite some concerns, heat pumps have had a positive impact on the decision to buy a home

Survey in Great Britain among heat pump owners – this is how the study went

Approximately 2,800 homeowners from Scotland, England and Wales took part in the study. In order to participate, the geothermal or air-source heat pump had to have been installed at least six months ago. The majority of the study participants (87 percent) used air-source heat pumps. The age range of the houses was wide: while 34 percent were built after 2012, 16 percent of the participants lived in houses built before 1900. 75 percent of the heat pump owners who participated in the study lived in rural areas.

As mentioned in the summary, there is one perhaps surprising aspect of the study: satisfaction with the heat pump does not depend on the age of the house. Nesta writes: "People who live in a Victorian-era building are just as satisfied with their heat pump as people with modern houses or mid-century houses." This applies to people who have installed a heat pump in their own homes.

Vast majority of UK heat pump owners satisfied – only the cost

The survey participants had a predominantly positive view of the heat pump, with an average of 80 percent recommending the device to others. 70 percent stated that they were satisfied with all or almost all aspects of the heater – apart from the running costs. The strongest point here was safety with 91 percent, followed by the treatment of hot water (89 percent), and the reliability of heat pumps (85 percent). The volume was also rated positively by the vast majority of respondents (85 percent). The heating of the rooms, energy efficiency, user-friendliness and maintenance costs were also rated positively by the majority.

The majority were also satisfied with the installation: the average value here was 80 percent. More than three-quarters of the participants (78 percent) are satisfied with the use and control of their heat pump. Nevertheless, the survey still sees room for improvement here. This is also reflected in the quote from this participant: "I really like the heat pump, but the instructions for use are far more complicated than, let's say, operating the thermostat on a boiler. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it and I think it's safer and cleaner than gas." In addition, a heat pump can be cheaper than gas.

Conclusion from British study: More information about heat pumps helps to improve their image

The British study concludes that the survey paints a positive picture for the future of the heat pump: it shows that the majority of users are satisfied with their heating system.

In addition, she mentions a few points that could make heat pumps even more attractive. Firstly, to facilitate access to independent information on heat pumps. Secondly, to increase the ease of use and thirdly, to reduce the installation time. By the way, a heat pump works like an inverted refrigerator.
