Jobs and salaries: What do hairdressers actually earn in Germany?

Almost everyone needs them from time to time: hairdressers. But what do they actually earn? A look at the salary scale.

Munich – 4105 euros: This is the average gross salary that an employee earns in Germany with a full-time job per month. This was determined by the Federal Statistical Office (StBA) for 2022. Those who earn more are among the high earners. As a rule, the following also applies: A higher level of education means a higher salary. With a bachelor's degree, the average salary rises to 4,551 euros, with a master's degree to 6,188 euros. But what do hairdressers earn, who often score points not only with craftsmanship, but also with psychological skills and social commitment?

Bringing up the rear in the salary ranking in Germany: What hairdressers earn

If you scroll down to the bottom of the salary comparison between eleven different professions of the Federal Statistical Office 2022, the hairdresser is there with 1,778 euros gross per month. So the salary is well below average. By way of comparison, the geriatric nurse, who is often very low-paid, earns 3,559 euros, i.e. twice as much. If you look at the top of the salary ranking, it becomes even clearer how big the salary differences are: pilots earn an average of 8,739 euros a month, almost five times as much as a hairdresser. Unless, perhaps, as a hairdresser, you also count stars and starlets among your customers.

Nevertheless, the profession of hairdresser is still popular: The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, which lists 321 training occupations according to the number of training contracts concluded in 2022, shows it in 22nd place. 6,675 people opted for this training in 2022. The proportion of men was 30.8% and the proportion of women was 69.1%. Nevertheless, around seven percent fewer trainees have opted for the profession compared to 2021. At that time, training as a hairdresser had taken 18th place.
