Nestlé delivery stop for several supermarkets – price war escalates

2023-06-04T04:40:57.639Z

Highlights: Several supermarkets have stopped deliveries of Nestlé products. The reason is price disputes with the Retail Trade Group RTG. Nestlé is demanding a whopping double-digit percent price increase. RTG has rejected this, whereupon Nestlé no longer supplies supermarkets in order to build up pressure. For consumers, it remains to be seen whether – and at what prices – Nestle products will return to the shelves of Tegut, Netto, Globus and Co. The price war between Nestlé and RTG is said to have been going on for weeks.

Food has become increasingly expensive in recent months. However, many supermarkets do not want to accept the latest price increase – which is why Nestlé is stopping deliveries of its products.

Munich – In recent months, there have been repeated supply bottlenecks at supermarkets. Hardly anyone is likely to have missed the gaps in the shelves. One reason for the bottlenecks is the Ukraine war, which is affecting the production and delivery routes of many foods. But there are also other reasons for empty shelves – disputes between the manufacturers of the products and the supermarkets. As the Lebensmittel-Zeitung (LZ) reports, there is currently a dispute with Nestlé – for several supermarkets this has resulted in a delivery stop of the products.

Delivery stop for Nestlé products – several supermarkets are no longer supplied

The manufacturer Nestlé produces numerous products for everyday use, from well-known brands such as Maggi, to dips and sauces from Thomy to pet food. According to the company, leading brands belong to the group and the products are sold in 188 countries. Soon, however, the products will no longer be found in many supermarkets – the reason for this is price disputes with the Retail Trade Group RTG, which includes these markets:

  • Bünting
  • Globe
  • Metro
  • Net
  • Tegut
  • Rossmann

Price war between Nestlé and supermarkets escalates – delivery stop for products

According to the LZ, trade managers report that Nestlé is demanding a whopping double-digit percent price increase. RTG has rejected this, whereupon Nestlé no longer supplies supermarkets in order to build up pressure. RTG apparently speaks of the "currently largest dispute with a supplier." Neither RTG nor Nestlé have yet responded to an inquiry from Lebensmittel-Zeitung.

The price war between Nestlé and RTG is said to have been going on for weeks. In the meantime, some products can no longer be found in the branches of Tegut, Netto, Globus and Co. "There are currently delivery problems with products of the Maggi brand," reads, for example, the sign of a Globus market where the products are missing. But so far, not all products have been affected by the delivery stop. Gaps are probably mainly found in products from Thomy and Maggi. Other products such as pizza or pet food are still available.

Price wars and supply freeze: Not the first drastic measure by Nestlé

The delivery stop is not the first drastic step taken by the manufacturer, only recently Nestlé removed the popular Nestea iced tea from supermarket shelves. Although the products are popular, the manufacturer is controversial – for example, a deal with Ankerkraut triggered a real shitstorm. For consumers, it remains to be seen whether – and at what prices – Nestlé products will return to the shelves of Tegut, Netto, Globus and Co.
