Munich – Often you go out because of a special thing, but then find a whole bunch of other things in the supermarket that you want to buy. Most people who go shopping are familiar with such situations. But what do you do if you have consciously renounced a car because you only want to get a little something anyway and in the end the purchases become too much to carry in your hands? Can you put the goods in your own bag in the supermarket? A question that is also on the minds of the Reddit community.
Can products be put in your own pocket when shopping in the supermarket?
Under a post with the question "Can you pack your purchases in your own bag/backpack in the supermarket until you put it on the conveyor belt at the checkout?" comments are collected, one user has a clear opinion: "So putting things in your backpack is simply theft, the items don't belong to you yet," writes one user.
Most of the other comments take a less strict view of this. "In short, no. Lang: where there is no plaintiff, there is no judge," one commentary reads. Other Reddit users have their own bagged shopping habits. "I actually only do this at a smaller supermarket where most of the employees know me. Otherwise, I feel rather... Strange? And I don't want to put the employees in a stupid situation."

Some employees apparently really get a queasy feeling when cashing in – at least according to another comment. "I once worked at the cash register during my studies. I can't tell you if it's forbidden, but it's very uncool to put the goods in your own bag. The employees in the store don't have the right to look into your bag, so there's always a risk that you just won't put all the goods on the conveyor belt."

But for many customers, there are also practical reasons for using their own bag when shopping. "I almost always do this and wait for someone to talk to me every time. But it's never happened before." Another user goes further and writes "If a supermarket were to really stress out there, it would definitely mean that I would never go there again. So I think it's in the interest of the stores to tolerate that."

Other comments deal with the fact that many supermarkets no longer have classic shopping baskets and that a trolley is often too big. Another comment states that the discussion will soon be over anyway, "when more and more unmanned shops will open with self-checkout checkouts, where no one is there anyway who cares how you transport something, as long as you pay for the goods. Then it's just electronically secured again or something."

But what does it look like legally if you put your purchases in your own bag in the supermarket? The insurance company Ergo writes on its website that it is a gray area. In many markets, the use of cloth bags and one's own shopping bags is tolerated. By the way, the supermarket employees have no right to check the bags – only the police are allowed to do that.
