Vegan cold cuts in the test: Most of the products fail

2023-06-04T04:41:20.286Z

Highlights: A full two-thirds of the products tested achieved the grades of poor or insufficient. The reason: too much salt, problematic substances, mineral oil and thickeners. A total of 17 brands fell out of 20 brands in a test by Öko Test, which concerned 17 brands of butter. The test produced a positive result because neither in taste nor in mouthfeel there was anything wrong with the products.. A disappointing result was shown in the eco-test of vegan sausage. A full three-quarters of the vegan sausage products tested were rated defective or inadequate.

A disappointing result was shown in the eco-test of vegan sausage. A full two-thirds of the products tested achieved the grades of poor or insufficient.

Munich – The meatless and vegan diet is experiencing a boom in Germany. Aldi, among others, wants to integrate more vegan products into its range. Animal welfare and climate protection are a reason for many Germans to give up meat and animal products. But only a few people want to do without sausage, meat and the like altogether. Meat substitutes are ideal for enjoying the popular dishes and products without meat.

Disappointing result: Vegan sausage products in the Öko Test

Now Öko Test tested exactly such products. More specifically, they looked at sausage substitutes. But veggie schnitzel has also already been tested. But the result of the vegan sausage product test: disappointing. This is because a full two-thirds of the products tested were rated defective or inadequate. The reason: too much salt, problematic substances, mineral oil and thickeners.

Öko Test: Vegan sausage cold cuts contained too much salt

Some like it in abundance, others almost don't need it at all: salt. But too much of it is unhealthy. According to Öko Test, there was a lot of salt in some of the vegan sausage cold cuts. So much so that if they were real sausage, they would have to carry a warning label in Finland.

In addition, according to Öko Test, some of the meat substitutes contained problematic substances. These include aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH). This substance was found in one of the products. Of particular concern is that the MOAH group may include carcinogenic compounds. But that's not all. Impurities with saturated petroleum hydrocarbons (MOSH) were found in most of the products. However, no harmfulness has been proven here. However, it is also not clear whether MOSH is harmless. For this reason, food should contain as little of it as possible.

Öko Test reveals: Mineral oil and thickeners are among the shortcomings of vegan sausage products

Five of the products tested had greatly increased mineral oil components, explains Öko Test. Many of the others contained traces or slightly elevated mineral oil levels. These often come out of the packaging and are transferred to the food. But lubricants for plastic casings can also be a reason for increased mineral oil levels.

Another reason for the poor ratings of vegan sausage products is, according to Öko Test, the thickener carrageenan. This is controversial and is suspected of triggering inflammation in the intestine. A total of twelve of the sausage substitutes tested contained the substance.

However, there is a positive result that the test produced. Because neither in taste nor in mouthfeel there was anything wrong with the products.

Again and again it happens that products do not perform well in tests. This was also the case with a test by Öko Test, which concerned butter. A total of 17 out of 20 brands fell through.
