A few days after the first green light in Brazil to a controversial bill that takes land from the natives, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, met in Paris the 'cacique' (tribal chief) Raoni, one of the best-known faces in the struggle for the defense of the Amazon and indigenous peoples. The visit comes ahead of a long-awaited meeting, scheduled for the end of the month, where proposals to strengthen the so-called 'green economy' will be discussed.
"Preserving tropical forests, ensuring respect for the rights of indigenous peoples, this is his life's work, his struggle for humanity," Macron wrote on Twitter, referring to 93-year-old indigenous leader Kayapo.
"We are attentive to what Cacique Raoni tells us, 18 days before the Paris Summit for a New Global Financial Pact that the world needs," added the French leader.
