Fruit prices have risen this year in a way that surprised even us: when we checked how much seasonal fruit costs us in 17 different supermarket chains, we found a gap of 139% between the cheapest and most expensive fruit baskets. Grapes, for that matter, cost an average of close to NIS 40 per kilogram, with a gap of 235% between the cheapest chain (Rami Levy Shivuk Hashikma with NIS 11.90 per kilogram) and the most expensive chain (Dabah with NIS 39.90 per kilogram). If you buy them at a local greengrocer, the price will even reach 50 shekels). The increase in prices requires rethinking: now even from an economic point of view, it is not worthwhile to let the grapes spoil sooner than expected.

Before we learn how to store them correctly, the right choice should already be made at the greengrocer or supermarket - and choose grapes that are firm, plump and attached to the stem. Lift the cluster of grapes and examine whether the grapes are loose and whether they have grapes rolling at the bottom of the box - these are good indications that the cluster is probably no longer at its peak and is likely to spoil faster. Of course, you should avoid shrunken and watery grapes. However, if you see a whitish coating on a cluster of grapes - that's fine. It is a natural substance that protects the grapes from moisture loss.

So how to properly store an entire cluster of grapes?

Have you ever walked into someone's kitchen and noticed a nice big bowl of grapes on the countertop? While this storage method is convenient for those who want to grab 2-3 grapes on the go, it is the fastest way to rot. The grapes you just brought home were washed with water, dried with absorbent paper and stored in a ventilated container in the refrigerator. This will allow them to last up to three weeks! You should avoid putting them in an airtight container or plastic bag, as this will prevent their vital airflow. You can also keep whole grapes in the box where they came if you don't have a suitable ventilated container for storing food. It is recommended just before that to wash also the box of grapes.

How to store cut grapes?
Did you cut grapes for a child and he didn't finish? Don't throw away. If you have sliced grapes left, they can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. If you notice edges starting to dry out and brown, that's okay – they're still safe to eat. Use the sliced grape scraps as an addition to yogurt or oatmeal, or as an occasional snack.

Can grapes be frozen?
Absolutely. If you've never eaten frozen grapes, what are you waiting for?! It's a quick and perfect snack. To freeze, simply wash and dry the grapes – and sprinkle them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place them in the freezer for a few hours or overnight and after they freeze, you can move them to a storage container so they're more accessible.

For an upgraded dessert that ranges from sweetness to subtle sourness, try squeezing half a lemon on the grapes and rolling them with a teaspoon of sugar before freezing.

How should you wash grapes?

Washing the grapes before storing or eating them is important because it may prevent contamination from bacteria and pesticides found on the fruit. The bacteria can come from people who have touched the cluster of grapes right in front of you in the supermarket and the pesticides are designed to protect the grapes from insects and other creatures that eat them. That is why it is important to remove any trace of them before eating.

The first way to clean the grapes is the familiar method: simply wash them with cold water. Although this is usually enough, it does not always remove all pesticides and bacteria.

The second method is to use water with vinegar. You can use apple cider vinegar or white vinegar: Let the grapes sit in the vinegar water for 5 to 10 minutes, although you can also simply spray the grapes with vinegar water and rinse with cold water. Always remember to wash them with cold water before eating.

Want to really invest? The third method is to wash them with baking soda powder and salt. First wash the grapes with cold water, then transfer them to a clean bowl and sprinkle the grapes with two teaspoons of baking soda and two teaspoons of salt. Using your fingers, gently rub the grapes with baking soda and salt. Then, lift the bowl and shake it gently for about thirty seconds to one minute. Transfer the grapes back to your colander and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Chew the grapes thoroughly to make sure you have removed all baking soda. This method is most effective in removing pesticides.
