How much do Germans actually earn? And which age group owns the most wealth? A study presents the economic situation in Germany.
Munich – Especially in times of inflation, many people have to turn over every penny twice, although a gradual end to price increases is expected. Many things have become more expensive in recent months, including prices for holidays. But where is the average income – and how much wealth do Germans have?
Income in Germany: Which income is considered poor – and which is considered rich
Every three to four years, the Bundesbank publishes a study on the economic situation of private households. Various questions about assets are asked. The last time this survey took place was in 2021. These are the results, such is the economic situation of the Germans.

Net income: Germans get less in old age
So how much income a person has at their disposal often depends heavily on their age. While Germans between the ages of 16 and 24 have a median net income of 14,800 euros, people between the ages of 35 and 44 can fall back on a net income of 38,200 euros. After that, however, income decreases again. People over the age of 75 receive a median of only 24,900 euros net per year.

Net worth in Germany: Between the ages of 55 and 64, Germans have the most
The situation is very similar with the net worth of Germans. At a young age, it is initially less, but increases increasingly. However, assets decline again from around retirement age, which, according to the Bundesbank, is due to gifts, for example to family members.

For example, people aged 16 to 24 have a median net worth of 11,400 euros, while 55- to 64-year-olds have assets of 229,300 euros. From the age of 75, Germans have an average net worth of 129,500 euros at their disposal.
According to the Bundesbank, Germans' wealth has risen – inequality between net wealth has fallen within four years
Overall, the wealth of private households in Germany has risen, according to the Bundesbank. The average net worth has increased by a total of 2017,83 euros since the last survey in 600. Households with less wealth benefited in particular.
They were able to increase their balances, especially in current and savings accounts. And there is another piece of good news. Between 2017 and 2021, inequality between net wealth also fell slightly.
