Highlights: Aldi Nord tried to cover up the price increase of a chocolate. A price increase is to be concealed by trickery in the packaging size and weight. A particularly brazen "deceptive package of the month" were the TUC Bake Rolls from Mondelez. Orange juice could also become more expensive in supermarkets and discounters in the near future – but this is due to poor harvests.. This time, the dubious "Deceptive Packaging of the Month" award goes to Aldi Nord.

This time, the dubious "Deceptive Packaging of the Month" award goes to Aldi Nord. The discounter tried to cover up the price increase of a chocolate:

Every month, the Hamburg Consumer Advice Centre awards a product the negative prize "Deceptive Packaging of the Month". Most recently, chocolate from Aldi Nord was hit: a price increase is to be concealed by trickery in the packaging size and weight. The consumer advice center explains what exactly the fraud is:

Aldi Nord receives "Deceptive Packaging of the Month" award – for chocolate

Attentive customers reported to the consumer advice center that Aldi Nord had changed something about the "Chocolat Amandes" of its own brand Moser Roth. These are different types of filled chocolate, the content of which has shrunk from 184 and 168 grams, respectively, to 150 grams. However, the package itself looks larger, as the design has simply been dragged out, according to the Hamburg consumer advice center.

That alone wouldn't be so bad. However, the customer is also led around by the nose by the secret price increase. A particularly brazen "deceptive package of the month" were the TUC Bake Rolls from Mondelez. The price was hidden and more than doubled.

Aldi Nord: Discounter secretly increases the price of chocolate

The old price was 1.59 euros, now the chocolate costs 1.49 euros. Sounds like a price reduction at first. But as mentioned, the filling quantity of the candy has become less. If you do the math, you will notice that Chocolat Amandes has become up to 15 percent more expensive, depending on the variety. Orange juice could also become more expensive in supermarkets and discounters in the near future – but this is due to poor harvests.

In addition to the hidden price increase, there is also the fact that savings were made on "valuable ingredients, especially marzipan", according to the consumer advice centre. There are now also five instead of four bars of chocolate in the packaging, so it looks like more at first glance.

"Deceptive packaging of the month": Aldi Nord defends itself

And another brazen scam goes hand in hand with this "deceptive package of the month": The employees of the consumer advice center have not yet been able to find new price tags for the changed packaging size, neither on the Internet nor in the store (as of June 5). But: The old, larger packaging would now be sold for 1.89 euros instead of 1.59 euros.

Aldi Nord justifies itself to the consumer advice center Hamburg as follows: "For production reasons" the pack formats have been "harmonized". "It is not possible to speak of a hidden price increase here, as prices have recently risen throughout the chocolate range," it continues. (resa)
