Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, one of the voices that internationalized bossa nova, died Tuesday at the age of 83, according to her family. Born Astrud Evangelina Weinert, she adopted the surname of her husband, fellow singer Joao Gilberto, who died in 2019.
Sofia Gilberto, granddaughter of the artist, reported her death on Instagram, without offering details about the cause of her death or the place of death.
"Astrud was the real girl who brought the bossa nova of Ipanema to the world. She was the pioneer and the best. At the age of 22 she gave voice to the English version of 'Garota de Ipanema' and gained international fame," Sofia recalled of her grandmother, who was the wife of João Gilberto, another music figure.
Astrud's interpretations of songs such as Day by day, Agua de beber, Fly me to the moon, The shadow of your smile or Gentle rain, among many others, are also famous.
