Highlights: Cats are light sleepers by nature because they have to be on the lookout for prey and predators. Cats are creatures of habit with an accurate sense of time. They wake us up in the morning when, for example, they want to play, go out into the garden or eat their food. Landtiere.de asked internationally renowned cat expert Birga Dexel and received a clear answer: "Cats know very well that we humans are not other cats. We do not compete like conspecifics in terms of their important resources"

Many cat owners believe that their cat wakes them up in the morning because they are hungry. However, that's not quite true – at least that's what one cat owner says in a viral Instagram video. What's with that?

An Instagrammer from Canada (@bbymisogrey) claims something about cats that is new to many cat owners about their favorites: "If you think your cat is especially affectionate in the morning because he's hungry, you're wrong." This statement is made by the owner of "miso the bsh kitten" on Instagram.

"miso the bsh kitten" is a pretty cute, nine-month-old grey British Shorthair cat from Canada. On her account, the owner keeps her followers up to date on the adventures of the lilac-colored cat on a daily basis.

Most recently, the digital creator surprised us with news regarding the behavior of cats: The velvet paws wake us up for a variety of reasons - and usually not because they are hungry, at least says the owner of "miso the bsh kitten". But why is it that cats often wake up their owners quite impatiently in the morning and seem to ask for food?

Cats wake us up because they're worried about us – is that true?

"Cats are light sleepers by nature because they have to be on the lookout for prey and predators," says @bbymisogrey. "Since your cat thinks you're also a cat and live rent-free in their colony, they're worried about you if you're completely knocked out during the night, so they'll check on you to make sure you're still alive, and they'll be very happy that you'll wake up again in the morning." But what is the truth of this claim? Landtiere.de asked the internationally renowned cat expert Birga Dexel and received a clear answer:

Cats know very well that we humans are not other cats. We do not compete like conspecifics in terms of their important resources; on the contrary, we provide them with these such as eating, interaction, cuddling places to doze and sleep, loving hands to caress. Cats are creatures of habit with an accurate sense of time. They wake us up in the morning when, for example, they want to play, go out into the garden or eat their food.

Comments on Instagram: Users express their opinions

In the comments, the users tell their very own stories, which they experience with their velvet paws and are amazed at the derivation of the Instagram user:

  • "Is that why I wake up and he's literally staring at me?"
  • "It's like clockwork, every night I wake up at the same time and the eyes stare at me. 🤣 "
  • "That sounds suspiciously like what a hungry cat would say."
  • "My cat just assumes I'm dead and then doesn't look after me."
  • "My cat sleeps soundly and I usually wake him up."
  • "I pick up my cat and move him when he's asleep and he doesn't wake up. 😂 So often I'm shocked that he's dead. Does this mean that he is the alpha male and that I should check on him at night? 😮"

Within two weeks, the cute video reached 5.5 million clicks and almost 550,000 likes – but users should not simply adopt everything that is made credible to them on social media.

No matter why cats wake up their owners at night or in the morning, most of the time they probably just want to let them know that they love their favorite people.
