At a meeting of mayors as part of the activities of the National Headquarters for the Establishment of an International Airport in the Negev, held at the Beer Sheva Municipality, 20 mayors from the north and south decided to deepen their cooperation – for the establishment of two additional international airports in Israel, a large complementary international airport in Nevatim in the Negev, together with a regional international airport in Haifa;

The heads of the municipalities that participated in the meeting declared their intention to continue their joint activity on the issue and to work to enlist additional authorities, particularly authorities from central Israel that are interested in a long-term solution to the problem of aircraft noise from Ben Gurion Airport.The meeting was opened by Be'er Sheva Mayor Ruvik Danilovich, who said that the time has come to make a decision on an issue on which there is wall-to-wall agreement.

"All senior Defense Ministry officials were former generals in the Southern Command, are familiar with the challenges of the Negev and must be partners in establishing its future based on their knowledge of the region."

The heads of the local authorities emphasized the fact that in the previous government, the government's decision 2050 to build the airport in Ramat David was canceled, due to the Elam Committee's conclusions that an airport should be built in southern Israel and Haifa, and not in Ramat David.

Now that there is a new government, the heads of the local authorities have decided to act with it with determination, presenting professional arguments that weaken the Defense Ministry's veto position on the Nevatim alternative, in favor of advancing the construction of the airport in the Negev as part of a "courageous decision that will allow the Negev to take off and all of Israel to soar," in the words of the chiefs of staff.

In addition, during the meeting, the heads of the local authorities unanimously made the decision to continue funding the activity, welcomed the work with the professionals, and noted favorably the fruitful cooperation between the northern and southern authorities, which will continue until the goal is achieved.

Chairman of the Negev Council and Mayor Arad Nissan Ben Hamo: "The airport in Nevatim is a decision that will change the face of the Negev and ensure its future and the future of its residents for a hundred years to come, and therefore it is important to fight for it."

Head of the Galilee and Valleys Cluster and Head of the Jezreel Valley Regional Council Eyal Betzer: "The road to a complementary-international airport in Nevatim passes through the construction of a regional airport in Haifa. The solution presented here today and accepted by the heads of the councils by consensus is the optimal response to the aviation crisis in the State of Israel. Instead of going against the interests of residents of the periphery, decision makers now have an opportunity to put on the table a solution that will contribute to the development of the Negev and Galilee economically, transportation and employment. We support our brother mayors in the south in their just struggle."
