(ANSA) - ROME, JUNE 07 - The calm sea pushes the departures of migrants to Italy and these are days of overwork for the Coast Guard that in a few hours has recovered almost 1,500 people in the Ionian Sea, in the area of its responsibility.
Specifically, on the night between 5 and 6 June - following a Frontex aerial sighting - two patrol boats, respectively coming from Roccella Ionica and Catania, with the collaboration of a Frontex patrol boat, intervened to rescue about 590 people on board a fishing boat 52 miles from Crotone. The migrants were chased and transferred to the Coast Guard ship Diciotti.
Diciotti itself was subsequently involved in the rescue of a second fishing boat with about 650 migrants on board. The activities were carried out with the support of the Frontex ship "MAI 1107", two Coast Guard patrol boats, as well as a merchant ship present in the area.
During the early hours of yesterday morning, a patrol boat of the Coast Guard of Crotone rescued the 47 migrants on board a sailboat in distress. Among them: two children who needed immediate medical attention.
Ended this night, however, the rescue operations of about 130 migrants on board a small boat in difficulty 117 miles from Capo Rizzuto, also reported by Alarm Phone, on which the patrol boat of the Coast Guard of Crotone and a naval unit of the Guardia di Finanza intervened. (ANSA).
