Nine flowers that can bloom again after pruning in June

2023-06-07T08:11:38.221Z

Highlights: If you cut back certain flowers and perennials after the first bloom in summer, you can expect a second bloom after a few weeks. A good example are multi-flowering noble roses, whose weak shoots and energy-saving wild shoots should be cut back heavily to stimulate new flower formation. It is important to supply the plants with sufficient water and nutrients, for example with organic fertilizer in the form of nettle or horsetail decoction. For many amateur gardeners, cleaning out wilted inflorescences is a daily routine for the flowers in the garden or on the balcony. However, many shy away from a stronger pruning in the growth phase. This has several advantages - not only that the flowers do not spread unintentionally via seeds or are less susceptible to disease - the plants are also stimulated to grow by the strong intervention and can bloom a second time in the course of the summer if you pay attention to a few things.

In June or early summer, many (spring) flowers have already presented their blossoms and the best time of the year seems to be behind them. But some plants, primarily perennials, reassemble. This means that they bloom again once or twice after the main flowering in late summer, on average after four to eight weeks. A good example are multi-flowering noble roses, whose weak shoots and energy-saving wild shoots should be cut back heavily to stimulate new flower formation and keep the plant healthy. Strong shoots, on the other hand, are shortened only slightly.

The following nine flowers like pruning during the summer before setting seeds:

  • Larkspur
  • Phlox
  • Golden and yarrow
  • More often blooming roses
  • Catmint
  • Meadow cranesbill
  • Bougainvillea
  • Lady's mantle
  • Lavender

Depending on the species, pruning is done to varying degrees

How far you cut back the plants depends on the species. For example, while delphinium can be cut about a hand's width above the ground, lavender can only be cut by a third and bougainvillea by half the growth.
