It turns out that there are many Americans who call their boys and girls names inspired by tourist destinations. That's according to a new study conducted by travel and tourism company Bounce. As of 2023, the most common "touristy" names for babies in the United States are Hudson and Sydney.
The authors of the study examined baby name data from the past two decades to reveal the travel destinations that inspired parents to choose names. This choice stems from many reasons, including the desire to commemorate a favorite vacation destination, the shared honeymoon destination, and even the name of the place where the boy or girl was "created".

Most popular: Hudson and Sydney
Travel Pulse reports that the name Hudson, which comes from the name of the famous river in New York City, has been a popular choice for many parents since the turn of this century. Since 2000, 77,000 baby boys have been given the name commemorating the river.
Sydney, in second place, is the name inspired by Australia's famous port city, which in 2000 hosted the Olympics (which likely caused many parents to use this name). Since that year, 107,000 girls have been given the name Sydney.
Other names include Preston, a name of English origin with roots in Lancashire, England. In the United States, there are two cities with this name - in Connecticut and Idaho. The name Camden is also popular, due to its vibrant London borough.

New York and Ancient Egypt continue to excite
The only name in the ranking of the ten most popular names given to both boys and girls is Dakota. And now a surprise: in sixth place on the list of boys' names inspired by tourist destinations isIsrael. I only wonder whether the Americans express it in the above or in the latter... However, since 2000, some 35,000 American babies have been called "Israel." Rounding out the list of boys are Devon, Dallas, Phoenix and Orlando.
For the girls, Sydney is followed by the names Brooklyn (104,566 babies) and Alexandria (42,010) – proving that both the famous New York City borough and ancient Egypt continue to excite the imagination of many American parents. Further down the list are London, Dakota, Paris, Carolina, Guadeloupe (Guadeloupe, France), Jerney and Adelaide (named after the city in Australia).
This study examined all the names associated in one way or another with the world of tourism and travel, and was based on the American population registry. These included, but are not limited to, names of countries, capitals, rivers, mountains, general travel-related terms (such as Journey) and other travel destinations around the world.
