"Planet Ocean: the tides are changing" is the slogan chosen by the United Nations for the World Oceans Day that has been celebrated in many countries since 1992 every year on June 8 and which urges to "put the ocean first".
The ocean covers most of the land, but only a small part of its waters have been explored.
Despite humanity's total dependence on it and on the breadth and depth of what it offers us, the ocean receives in return only a fragment of our attention and resources." But, reads the UN webpage dedicated to the Day, "the tides are changing, and to celebrate this Day and the theme of 2023, Ocean Planet, the United Nations is joining forces with policy makers, scientists, private sector executives, civil society representatives, indigenous communities, celebrities and young activists to put the ocean first".
This year is the 10th of the annual World Oceans Day Photo Contest and a celebratory exhibition is planned at the UN headquarters in New York.
