When the neighbor's lawn sprouts more beautifully and greener than your own, many a person turns pale with envy. Maybe you made one of the following mistakes?
The lawn is bare, overgrown with weeds or yellowish in color? Many garden owners in Germany are struggling with this problem. But why is it that the lush green does not want to sprout?
The lawn was mowed too short
A mistake that has happened to many garden enthusiasts* before: When it came to lawn care, they meant too well and simply mowed the juicy stalks too short. This damages the grass, especially in dry seasons - it makes it susceptible to sunlight, which leads to brown stalks or even bald spots. The weeds are particularly happy about this: horned clover, for example, grows extremely well in high light irradiation.
Instead, leave the lawn a length of three to four centimeters. From seven or eight centimeters in length, it is worth pruning again.
The lawn was sown at the wrong time
In order for the lawn seed to thrive, it needs temperatures between 14 and 25 degrees and should be worked into the soil with a rake up to half a centimeter or a whole centimeter - this is explained by the Bavarian Garden Academy. That's why it's important: don't start sowing before mid-April.
The lawn has not been watered properly
According to the Bavarian Garden Academy, sufficient soil moisture is the be-all and end-all for a well-kept lawn. Freshly sown seeds in particular are easily at risk of drying out and therefore need one to three litres of water per square metre several times a day.
If the lawn is "fully grown", i.e. has formed roots, watering two to three times a week is sufficient. However, you will then need five to ten liters for each square meter.

You mowed the lawn at the wrong time
The ideal time for the first lawn cut of the year is in April – after that, you should regularly reach for the lawnmower to stimulate the growth of the blades.
"It is important not to cut the lawn too short at certain times, for example after vacation, when the grass was very long," explains lawn expert Christian Engelmann to AL-KO. "Here you should proceed step by step: the first time you mow, the cutting height of the mower to eight centimeters and only the second time to the usual four to five centimeters."
Lawn: Forgot to fertilize?
Regular mowing is good for growth, but at the same time it robs the lawn of important nutrients: "That's why you should fertilize it six to eight weeks after the first cut," says Engelmann. Then in summer and again in autumn. How you should fertilize your garden in autumn, reveals 24garten.de*.
Do you fertilize the lawn by hand?
Then you'd better leave it alone. Fertiliser granules are only distributed irregularly on the lawn when they are ejected – the better choice would be a fertiliser trolley.
