Brittany: starfish accumulate on beaches, a phenomenon still unexplained

Highlights: Hundreds of starfish have washed up on the beaches of Finistère and Morbihan. Scientists do not exp. global warming in question. The phenomenon is still difficult to explain. In 2022, similar cases were spotted further south in Gironde near the dune of Pilat. Or in 2019 on the island of Oléron before disappearing with the rising tide. The species evolving in both hot and cold waters, the scientist can "advance nothing with certainty" in the case of Asteria.

The discovery of a starfish is sometimes gratifying, those stranded in Brittany much less. Since last Sunday, several hundred of them have accumulated on the beaches of Finistère and Morbihan, as revealed by France Bleu this Thursday, May 8, in the middle of World Oceans Day. Their presence is far from good news. Most are already dead or dying.

Global warming in question?

"Take the kids to play somewhere else. The smell of a rotting starfish is never very pleasant. Trying to save starfish by putting them back in the water is also useless," Guillaume Massé, a scientist and researcher at the CNRS, told local radio. It puts forward the cause of "pathogens, that is to say bacteria or viruses that would have attacked this species". A kind of star called Asteria.

The phenomenon is still difficult to explain. If Guillaume Massé dismisses the hypothesis of climate change as well as ocean warming, the species evolving in both hot and cold waters, the scientist can "advance nothing with certainty".

As surprising as it is, the stranding of starfish on Breton beaches is not the first to date. In 2022, similar cases were spotted further south on the beaches of Gironde near the dune of Pilat. Or in 2019 on the island of Oléron before disappearing with the rising tide.
