Discounters and supermarkets: prices for dairy products fall significantly

2023-06-08T08:43:44.427Z

Highlights: Discounters and supermarkets lower prices for dairy products. Over 50 dairy products will be reduced by up to 15 percent - permanently. The products include milk, cream, crème fraîche, a wide variety of yoghurts and coffee drinks. The biggest price advantage for customers is therefore with lactose-free UHT cream from Milsani, which should cost only 1.29 euros instead of 1.09 euros. It does not yet seem clear how long the low prices will apply.

High prices are a problem for many people in supermarkets and discounters. Dairy prices are now going down.

Kassel – In the wake of Russia's war of aggression, many food prices in Germany rose sharply. However, there could be a trend reversal. Aldi and Kaufland want to start – prices for dairy products are being lowered there.

Discounters and supermarkets lower prices for dairy products

As Aldi wrote in a press release, from June 7, 2023, over 50 dairy products will be reduced by up to 15 percent - permanently. The products include milk, cream, crème fraîche, a wide variety of yoghurts and coffee drinks. The biggest price advantage for customers is therefore with lactose-free UHT cream from Milsani, which should cost only 1.29 euros instead of 1.09 euros. Even more prices of Aldi's own brand products will be permanently reduced.

Curd cheese, one of the products that has risen the most in price in recent months, is now also 14 percent cheaper. But it is not only the discounter Aldi that wants to reduce many prices for dairy products. In an averaging, Kaufland also announced that it would even offer over 350 products at a lower price. According to Kaufland, the reason for this is lower raw material prices, which are to be passed on to customers. There, too, milk, cottage cheese and condensed milk, among other things, are included in the price.

Are the falling milk prices in supermarkets and discounters heralding a trend reversal?

In addition to Aldi and Kaufland, Edeka and Netto also announced that they would reduce prices for dairy products "to a comparable extent". It does not yet seem clear how long the low prices will apply. "We are heading for an undersupply," the Lebensmittel Zeitung quotes the chairman of the dairy industry association (MIV), Peter Stahl. Does the collapse in the price of dairy products nevertheless herald a turnaround in food prices? Prices for butter fell as early as April 2023, and also for coffee at the beginning of the year.

The prices for the following products are falling at some discounters and supermarkets:

  • UHT milk
  • Fresh whole milk
  • Curd cheese
  • Condensed milk
  • Coffee drinks
  • UHT cream

According to several experts, there are some indications that many prices in supermarkets and discounters will fall. According to Franz-Martin Rausch, Managing Director of the BVLH, for example, the problem is that not only purchase prices, but also costs for transport and logistics, heating and cooling systems have been increased. Trade expert Robert Kecskes believes that food prices will not rise as quickly as they did in 2022. However, he does not expect prices to fall permanently either. Again and again, prices are even increased with the help of deceptive packaging.
