Studies show testosterone is plummeting among young people – and is probably the main culprit – voila! health

2023-06-08T06:32:14.911Z

Highlights: Testosterone is responsible for the proportion of the face and chest, the increase of muscle mass, thickening of the bone, the formation of sperm cells and the sex drive. Low testosterone affects about 2% of men, with symptoms ranging from depression, loss of body hair and decreased libido to erectile dysfunction and low sperm count. Pornography and video games can also disrupt the sleep cycle, which may, in turn, lower testosterone levels. There are ways to boost testosterone levels and reap its benefits, including exercise, weight lifting, stress minimization, increasing vitamin D intake, sleeping well and avoiding alcohol.

Testosterone is dropping among young men – and it seems to be the intense viewing that is causing it. The male hormone is responsible, among other things, for the proportion of the face and chest, the increase of muscle mass, thickening of the bone, the formation of sperm cells and the sex drive. According to the Cleveland Clinic, low testosterone affects about 2% of men, with symptoms ranging from depression, loss of body hair and decreased libido to erectile dysfunction and low sperm count.

According to data published in Sun, testosterone levels in young men decrease due to excessive and/or gaming viewing. A 2017 study found that men who played video games had lower libidos than those who didn't. In fact, the researchers suggested that engaging in video games releases dopamine – the same "pleasure hormone" released during orgasm – which may contribute to a lack of desire/need for intimacy. Playing video games is fun — but it's also stressful, which can lead to an increase in the hormone prolactin and a decrease in testosterone. High prolactin levels in men can cause impotence.

Similarly, incessant viewing of pornography can also contribute to the reduction of sexual urges, although there is still no widespread consensus on this issue. A 2016 study found that "chronic internet pornography use resulted in erectile dysfunction and delayed ejaculation." However, some experts have found that watching videos does not necessarily lower testosterone levels, but rather curbs cravings.

"addiction can lead to insensitivity to sexual stimuli, which can reduce sexual arousal and lead to difficulties in achieving and maintaining an erection," Dr. Rob Weiss, a clinical sexologist and psychotherapist, told the Post last month.

Is that the solution?

A number of young men have opened up about their sexual distress: they couldn't get an erection with a woman after years of watching. In fact, a 2020 study found a link between watching adult videos and how long it takes a man to orgasm with his partner.

According to The Sun, pornography and video games can also disrupt the sleep cycle, which may, in turn, lower testosterone levels.

Diet can also affect testosterone levels – meaning bread, pastries, dairy products and desserts can be a problem. A 2018 study found that these foods, in addition to eating out, helped lower testosterone levels and cause unhealthy body composition.

There are ways to boost testosterone levels and reap its benefits. Healthline recommends exercise, weight lifting, stress minimization, increasing vitamin D intake, sleeping well, avoiding alcohol, and eating a balanced diet of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
