How to best respond to "Do you still have questions?" in the interview

2023-06-09T10:12:01.633Z

Highlights: At the end of the interview, HR managers often give the job candidate the chance to show interest in the position and the company. With "Do you still have questions" you want to lure the applicant out of his reserve a little - and get to know him further. "Dear Sir or Madam" is one of the worst mistakes in job applications, according to Jochen Mai, founder of the Career Bible, a career advice website. "What qualities should an applicant have for this position?" "What would my daily tasks look like?"

During the interview, numerous questions are asked, especially by the recruiters themselves. In the end, the applicant has the opportunity to do so, but what if you are at a loss for words now?

Ideally, the application will be followed by an invitation to an interview. That's when the excitement begins for some applicants, after all, they want to make the best possible impression on the potential new employer. This includes, for example, the right choice of outfit, intensive involvement with the company and its philosophy and preparation for certain questions such as weaknesses. As a job candidate, you should also be prepared for unusual questions that are intended to throw applicants off course.

At the end of the interview, in most cases, it is checked whether the applicant himself has any questions for the company or the interviewers. But what is the best way to react now – and what questions should you ask?

"Do you still have questions?" – see this moment as an opportunity

At the end of the interview, HR managers often give the job candidate the chance to show interest in the position and the company. With "Do you still have questions" you want to lure the applicant out of his reserve a little - and get to know him further.

In Forbes magazine, however, it is advised to summarize what has been done so far before the actual answers to the HR manager. For example, as follows: "I really enjoyed our conversation and really appreciate the fact that you spoke openly and honestly about the tasks of the position, the corporate culture, the current situation in relation to the further development of the company." After that, you could increase interest in the position again and ask about the further procedure of the application process.

What questions it is better not to ask

There are a few questions that applicants should avoid at this point. Broadly speaking, this applies to all information that could easily be found out on the company's website or with a quick internet search yourself.

The Forbes article also gives the tip to avoid questions that could be answered with a yes or no. It would be better if the questions were kept open so that a longer answer from the company/HR side would be possible.

  • "Why did you accept your job?"
  • "Why did you invite me for an interview?"
  • "What qualities should an applicant have for this position?"
  • "What can you tell me about the team I would work with?"
  • "What would my daily tasks look like?"
  • "Do you have any employee success stories and how they have developed in a similar position within the company?"

The Forbes article was also shared on Facebook, where readers also mentioned some possible questions that they themselves asked in job interviews.

  • "I've always asked what a normal working day in the office or company looks like"
  • "In order to be able to assess the working atmosphere: 'How high is the fluctuation here – and what do you think could be the reason for that?'"
  • "How many ideas and suggestions from employees have you implemented?"
  • "Is the position new? If not, what happened to the person in front of me? If so, is there a possibility that it will quickly become indefinite?"
  • "What can you tell me about opportunities for advancement or further training within the company?"

Of course, all these questions are only an inspiration and no guarantee that you will get the acceptance in the end. However, Jochen Mai, founder of the Career Bible, is convinced that there can only be one correct answer to the "Do you still have questions" question: "Yes. Absolutely! Unconditional! And quite a few!" He is also convinced that this is an opportunity for applicants – and that it should always be used if possible.
