2023-06-09T11:12:09.604Z

Highlights: Deodorant may be carried in hand luggage as long as it is in a 100-milliliter container. "Liquid" includes all liquids, gels and aerosols. The regulation also includes substances that are viscous, gel-like or creamy at room temperature. Öko-Test already tested deodorant creams in 2022 - but some of them were found to contain substances that were harmful to health. The rules apply to liquids that you take with you on the plane in your hand luggage:maximum 100 millilitres capacity per product.

The taking of liquids on the plane is precisely regulated. But what about deodorant and are there differences for spray, roller and cream?

On short trips, it is advisable to fly with hand luggage only. There are strict rules that determine exactly how much liquid can be taken on the plane and in what form. But what actually counts as a liquid? There are also certain regulations for deodorant that you should follow if you want to carry it in your hand luggage:

Deodorant in hand luggage: What is allowed on the plane?

In principle, the following rules apply to liquids that you take with you on the plane in your hand luggage:

  • maximum 100 millilitres capacity per product
  • packed in liquid bag. This must be transparent and closable and may hold a maximum of one liter
  • One liquid bag is allowed per person.

Deodorant may therefore be carried in hand luggage as long as it is in a 100-milliliter container. "Liquid" includes all liquids, gels and aerosols. The regulation therefore also includes substances that are viscous, gel-like or creamy at room temperature. Thus, deodorant rollers or deodorant creams are also affected.

On the plane: regulations for liquids

How does the flight crew know that there are only 100 milliliters of liquid in a container? Here you have to pay attention to the labeling. If the jar or spray can holds more than the permissible amount, it is immediately sorted out. Attention: It does not matter if the product has already been used and perhaps there is only a residue left in the container. What is important is what amount could theoretically be filled.

Again and again the question arises as to whether spray, be it deodorant or hairspray, is allowed in hand luggage. After all, we are talking about pressure vessels with flammable gases in them. As a general rule, containers that are under pressure may be included in hand luggage under the aforementioned regulations, as long as they are toilet items. However, other spray cans, such as for sports, must be in the checked baggage.

Solid deodorant or atomizer: alternatives for hand luggage

If you are still unsure, you can also switch to alternatives: deodorant atomizers do not require any propellant gases at all. Solid deodorant or shampoo cannot leak. In case of doubt, whether the same rules apply to them as to liquids and gels is determined by the staff at the respective airport. Completely natural: You can easily make your own deodorant cream from coconut oil and baking soda.
