Since its inception in 1983, the Moschino brand has been characterized by a transgressive soul that faithfully reflected the rebellious and counter-current character of its founder, the designer Franco Moschino, who died at the age of 44, in 1994. 2023 marks the fortieth anniversary of the maison and will be celebrated with a fashion show scheduled for Thursday 21 September in Milan Fashion Week. The event will be a tribute to the founder Franco Moschino and his legacy. Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Katie Grand, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and Lucia Liu are the four globally known stylists who will create the garments of the Moschino Women's Spring/Summer 2024 collection.
Each of them will create 10 looks inspired by the work of Franco Moschino. Despite his too short career, Moschino left an indelible mark on fashion and a recognizable style that combined provocations made by quotes from other brands and irreverent details, which were an intelligent criticism of the fashion system and impeccable elegance. A real shock for the time.
The designer, born in Abbiategrasso in the province of Milan in 1950, did not have an easy life at the beginning: orphaned at only eight years of age, he was raised by an uncle. In 1967 he began attending Istituto Marangoni in Milan to become a model maker and tailor. But his career took a sudden turn in 1971 when he became a draftsman for Gianni Versace, with whom he worked for six years. In 1983 he launched the Moschino Couture! which, contrary to the name, at the beginning proposed casual fashion and jeans. But in a short time his line ended up extending to lingerie, evening dresses, footwear, men's fashion and perfumes. In 1988 he launched a second line, the Cheap Chic Woman and Cheap Chic Uomo. Only in 1993 he will realize an exhibition with his paintings, within the retrospective X Years of Kaos. In the nineties Moschino stands in sharp contrast against the fashion industry. In fact, from 1991 it stops parading and in the following year a provocative advertising campaign is launched that represents an ecological and moral awareness. At the death of the founding designer, the Moschino brand passed to the designer's former assistant, Rossella Jardini. In the autumn of 1999 it was taken over by the Ferretti group. In 2013 the creative direction of the brand was entrusted to Jeremy Scott, American designer, born in 1975. The first Moschino collection of the Jeremy Scott era is inspired by fast-food and cartoon characters such as Spongebob. Jeremy Scot left Moschino last March. His pop and ironic vision has nourished the brand for a decade, defining an unmistakable playful and light-hearted style.
Who will be next or next, since it could be a woman, to design the brand? Perhaps the celebratory collection that will be seen on September 21 in Milan could be a test to test the skills of the four champions on the platform. Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele began her career as an editor for the magazine French Depeche Mode (name later acquired by the band of the same name) and then became creative director at Vogue America. With his personal "Cerf Style" he gave life to a movement that still characterizes the fashion system, namely that of dressing high-low. The photographers with whom he has collaborated are Steven Meisel, Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Helmut Newton. The models, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer Katie Grand is the founder of "Perfect Magazine", fashion magazine and creative agency launched in London in 2020. She collaborates with French Vogue, Japanese Vogue, Tatler, Industrie and Interview. Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, a New York-based stylist and editor, is known for her keen intuition for new designers and her narrative approach to enhancing diversity. In 2021, she was the first black woman to style a Vogue cover. Lucia Liu is a renowned Chinese fashion stylist and creative director who has been executive deputy editor and fashion director of T Magazine China since 2015, and styling director of Harper's Bazaar China in 2011. In 2012 he founded the platform theBallroom.
