The PC or laptop keyboard is quite affected over the years - with some home remedies it looks like the first day again.
When you buy it, everyone's fingers are still itching to finally type on the shiny keyboard - but after just a few weeks, dust and dirt are deposited on it. Not to mention the breadcrumbs or splashes of coffee that spread on it. Already the pleasure is no longer so great. And you can't even imagine how many germs could be on it. So that you no longer have to worry about this, all you need is a few home remedies - and the keyboard will look like new.
General tips for cleaning the keyboard from PC and laptop
If you often spread crumbs and the like on the keyboard, you should turn them over regularly and simply "shake out" the crumbs. Often some get lost in the spaces between the keys. However, you should be more careful with laptops.
But most of the time this is not enough: Then it is best to use a window or glass cleaner. In general, it is not recommended to clean the keyboard with liquids, as the electronics could react sensitively to them. However, these agents evaporate quickly and without leaving any residue. The only important thing is that you do not spray directly on the keyboard with the window cleaner, but first on a cloth and then wipe the keys with it. This also prevents liquid from collecting in the gaps.
You then clean the latter with a brush or cotton swab, which you use to run through the rows of keys.
Also make sure that external keyboards are disconnected from the PCor that the laptop is turned off and the battery is removed to avoid electric shock. If you are unsure, it is best to release the PC keys with the help of a blunt object such as a pen and wash them off one by one. In the case of a laptop, however, you should only do this in the extreme case - the keys are more delicate and mounts break off more easily.
Once the keys are removed and cleaned, you can then take care of the inner workings of the keyboard. Crumbs can be sucked out with a vacuum cleaner – but only use the lowest setting, otherwise their buttons will still be sucked up. Remove all other stains with a moistened cloth. You can get into the nooks and crannies with a damp cotton swab or cotton swab with a little washing-up liquid.

Can the keyboard be washed in the dishwasher?
As Georg Schnurer of the computer magazine "c't" told the German Press Agency, this would only have worked with the first versions of the IBM keyboards. However, these are already around 25 years old and are almost no longer used anywhere. More modern keyboards, on the other hand, should not be put in the dishwasher under any circumstances: "That ends in total loss."

The only exception would be if you detach the keycaps from the keyboard beforehand and put them in a laundry bag. According to the online portal Chip, these are usually dishwasher safe as long as no higher temperatures than 40 degrees are set. With cheap keyboards, you need to be careful, because the printed letters can come off more easily. Also, take a photo of the keyboard before removing the keys - so that it can be properly reassembled afterwards.
By the way: Instead of the dishwasher, you can also put the keycaps in the washing machine with other laundry items.

Cleaning the keyboard with alcohol
Remove the keycaps from the keyboard and soak them in 98 percent isopropyl alcohol. This is available in the pharmacy. Then just let it dry and the keys are back in. However, be aware that the fumes can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes. So with this cleaning method, ventilate well and protect your eyes and mouth.

Ingenious tips for dirty PC and laptop keys
- Post-its: Just take a post-it that slowly guides you through the rows of keys. The dust and dirt will stick to the adhesive strip without you having to remove the keys individually. For a little cleaning in between, this should be quite sufficient.
- Compressed air spray: A compressed air spray is perfect for getting rid of small crumbs on and between the keys. However, do not turn the spray attachment downwards to prevent liquid propellants from escaping that can damage the keyboard.
- Plasticine: There are certain kneading or slime masses on the market that are specifically used for keyboard cleaning. These cleaning compounds have antibacterial properties and can be easily pushed into the gaps. Then they are peeled off again and the dirt sticks to them. So you don't even have to release the buttons.
