49-euro ticket also in France? Wissing fights for German consumers

Berlin – The Deutschlandticket – also known as the 49-euro ticket – is a real bestseller in this country. More than ten million consumers are said to already own it. Currently, it is valid in Germany in all local transport and partly also in designated intercity trains of Deutsche Bahn. But if it goes according to the will of the Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing (FDP), the scope of the ticket could soon be massively extended beyond the borders of Germany. Is the Europaticket coming now?

According to the ideas of Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing, the new 49-euro ticket should also be recognised in France. France is planning a national ticket similar to the Deutschlandticket, the FDP politician told the Funke media group (Saturday) and the French newspaper Ouest-France.

"I would have a lot of sympathy for us to mutually recognize our national tickets." Germany and France could make a start and other European countries could follow suit. "However, this would be a complex undertaking that will take time."

After France, this applies to the Alsatian towns of Weißenburg and Lauterburg near the German border.

Meanwhile, a german-French project is about to be launched: From Monday (June 12, 10:00 a.m.), 18- to 27-year-olds residing in Germany or France can register for the free "Friendship Pass". This allows them to travel to the respective neighbouring country for one month between 1 July and 31 December.

30,000 tickets each will be issued on the German and French sides. The occasion is the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, with which the Federal Republic of Germany and France sealed their cooperation and friendship. (jon/dpa)
