An anti diabetes drug reduces risks of long covid by 40%

Highlights: A widely used and generic medicine used as an anti-diabetic has managed in the experimental phase to decrease the risks of long covid by 40% in more than 500 patients. The study just published in the 'Lancet Infectious Disease journal' is already considered a milestone, albeit with the need for further long-term analysis. In the tests conducted at the University of Minnesota on 564 non-severe and non-hospitalized covid patients, the use of metformin for 14 days has shown to lead to 40% less diagnosis.

A widely used and generic medicine used as an anti-diabetic has managed in the experimental phase to decrease the risks of long covid by 40% in more than 500 patients. The study just published in the 'Lancet Infectious Disease journal' is already considered a milestone, albeit with the need for further long-term analysis. But the data that emerged - according to various experts - are solid: in the tests conducted at the University of Minnesota on 564 non-severe and non-hospitalized covid patients, but at high risk for obesity and other conditions, the use of metformin for 14 days has shown to lead to 40% less diagnosis of long covid, compared to a group of control patients; 562 Covid patients with the same characteristics had in fact received a trivial placebo.

All volunteers were followed for 10 months. Even better results were also obtained in patients who received metformin from the very first days of infection with Sars-Cov2: for them the reduction of long covid risks was 63%. This is the first phase study - i.e. on patients - to have shown that a medicine can actually reduce the risks of long covid.
